.edu backlinks question...

As you probably, know there are many .edu sites with active forums that are being
used entirely for spamming with backlinks... You can't even see any congruent
conversations on some of them!

It's obvious that they mainly exist for backlink purposes. Would getting a backlink from
this kind of .edu site be of any value? Couldn't that possibly hurt your site? Search engines
have to aware of this...

    Hey Thomas,

If a spam site is linking to your site, you won't get penalized. Search engines, especially Google won't penalize you since they wouldn't really know if you're the one who made that link. It's possible that it's just your competitor who wants to destroy your rankings.

(Of course exemption if there are tons and tons of spam sites linking to you)

What would hurt your site though is that if you're the one linking to the spam site.

Anyhow, there are still a lot of .edu forums out there. I suggest you stay away from those filled with spam.

    Talk soon,
    Carl

There are many spam .edu sites but if you search, I am sure you would find authority .edu blogs and forums.

If you are building links from variety of sources then small amount of bad neighborhood links won't hurt you.

No value to the links beyond the "peeing in dark pants" warm feeling you get from having a .edu link.

No, it won't hurt or help your site.
