I am just getting started in niche sites. If my niche is "jogging pants", would it be best to choose the domain "jogging-pants.com" or "forjoggingpants.com" or does it really matter?

    Hi,

Sometimes the exact keyword in domain would help. But the most important things is
backlinks & quality of the backlinks based on the keyword you've chosen to dominate
    on.

    Hope this helps.

I would choose "jogging-pants.com" over "forjoggingpants.com", though probably not a huge deal. I don't mind one hyphen, but would prefer not to have an unnecessary word before my keyword in the URL -- but that's more voodoo than science (as are many things here). I wouldn't mind "joggingpantsdeals.com" or something like that, I just like the keyword first.

I have done .infos that rank very well in Bing an Yahoo, but not in Google. I've heard people say the domain extension doesn't matter, and maybe it doesn't, but I now go for com, org, and net.

If I can't get the exact match, I go for adding on an extension to the domain name, perferring to avoid using hyphens. I don't know if hyphenated domains are harder to rank, but to me, they look spammy.

I use a suffix on the domain instead of a prefix because I want the keyword up front.

I have a theory, as yet unproven, about doing a bit of social engineering using the domain name. My theory is that someone shopping for Jogging Pants will me more likely to go to a domain like:

    JoggingPantsStore
    JoggingPantsShop
    JoggingPantsCoupons
    JogginPantsSale
    etc....

Because it gives the impression that they are going to a place where they can buy or save money. As I said, unproven, but I know how my wife searches, and it matches her pattern.

I forgot to add that I'm doing this site as an adsense blog. So I'm not trying to attract people directly looking to shop for jogging pants. Just trying to rank high in Google for my niche.

IMO, people shopping for jogging pants are precisely the ones you want to attract because they are the ones who will click on the ads....

      Hi

Spot on Webdango. Wether you aim to sell the person something or not. Getting them to click through to you site from organic search is pretty important down the line!

I have a hyphenated site that ranks PERFECTLY over its competitors (without a lot of work). It's an exact keyword name domain but with a hyphen between the keywords because the non-hyphenated version was taken. I'm ranking at the top and raking in the commissions.
