Hi all,

I understand that PR is something that is widely debated in internet marketing. Some people downplay the importance of it. Some people claim that it is absolutely essential to success. I would just like to know what the heck it is...

I'm being a little facetious here. Of course I "know" what PR is, but my concern is the role that it plays in driving traffic to your website or blog. Say you have a domain name with a PR of 4. That's obviously better than a PR of 0-3, but is the traffic jump really that significant?

For an example, let's say I have a domain name that I have worked up to a PR ranking of 4 and I have a competitor that has a PR5 website. What would be the difference in traffic between his site and my own? Or is the difference in traffic even quantifiable? Can PR be used as a gauge in determining which website customers are more likely to flock to?

I suppose my main concern can be summed up this way: is PR something that I should even worry about? Do I need to monitor it constantly and find ways to continually increase it, or should I just ignore it altogether and just focus on following my business model? What are your thoughts?

Any comments are appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Your traffic is determined by your position in the SERPs, unless you use PPC or some other type of paid traffic. PR has nothing to do with your traffic.

PR is important to you when you are placing your links. The higher the PR of the web site or page, the higher the juice you get back to your site, and thus the higher you are expected to rise in the SERPs.

Not an exact science, but that seems to be the basics of the information I have been able to glean.

PR is a recognition of your page as an authority for the topic it covers. A higher PR means that a page is more important than pages with lower PR. PR is one of the factors that determines a page's ranking in the search results, and so if your page has a high PR then it has better chances of getting higher ranks in the SERPs.

I don't think you should be worry about the PR like what the above two warriors have mentioned. Do your very best to focus on getting more visitors to your site and if your visitors find your content useful, your PR will increase when they link to you. PR is just a byproduct kinda thing.

High PR "should" mean that google considers your site for SERPs before
lower PR sites. If they find a good match, bingo. That's what PR
really does. It gives your site a look first. But it does not mean
placing high, as a lower PR site may at that point in time, be a better
      match for a searcher.

If your site is as good a match as someone elses, and you have a higher
      PR, you are listed higher.

That means your better content can trump a higher PR site.

Your decent content will trump a lower PR site.

Sites being equal, higher PR wins out.

It is not the end all to end all, but can be a factor.

It is my belief that very high PR sites, PR6-9, have more trustworthiness
and are indeed given a boost over lower PR sites, even when the
lower PR site has better content.

On average, a PR8 or above will trump just about anything, borderline
relevancy. In other words, you have to give a knock out blow to the
      champ to win.

That's why sites like prchecker.info outrank anything with a search
      for pr, pagerank, etc. variations.

The higher the PR, the better chance you have for your
optimized keywords, as google sees your site is spot on and
chooses it, maybe never even considering the lower PR sites.

      Hi cbondcarolina,

Your page's PR has little or no direct effect on your SERP ranking. PR is valuable due to the apparent weighting effect on anchortext relevancy.

So it's not your own page's PR you should be concerned with, instead you should pay attention to the PR of pages that link to your page. Links from pages with high PR have a stronger anchortext influence on your page's relevancy score. And your page is ranked in the SERP based on this relevancy score.

And if you manage to secure links from pages with a high PR your own PR will increase.

In fact there are many many variables to calculate PR. Backlinks is one of them, but they musn't come from any site. Two points are very important with backlinks:

    1. The sites you want to link from must already have a high PR
    2. Those sites must have got to do with what your site is about.

PR is important because it gives others, and yourself an idea of where your site stands on the web!

Right now I have a site that I'm pretty sure is going to be a PR4 or 5 in the next update. It is listed as a PR2 right now. Until that time, I'm holding off on contacting larger sites for exchanges as they will see PR2 and not take us seriously.

I honestly don't know what PR any of the pages I own are. It doesn't mean anything so I don't bother my time with it.

I prefer to worry about the PR of pages that are linking to me.

That makes no sense... This is exactly what I'm saying! That is the importance of it, how we judge websites. That is why you should probably at least know what your page rank is, because that is what everyone else is doing.

Can someone please put what I'm saying into better words lol. It only matters because it matters to us. Does that make any sense??
