Does Linking Back To Article Directories Increase Traffic?

Hi all,

I am currently in the process of backlink building, but there are a couple of concerns that I would like to address.

I have heard that linking back to high PR sites is the best and easiest way to build traffic. Well, there are about 4 or 5 high PR article directories that I can think of where I can link back from. But is this approach really effective?

I would imagine that google would not put as much weight on linking back from article directories as opposed to linking back from other unique high-PR sites. What are your takes?

Secondary Question:

This is more of a poll than a question, but what are YOUR favorite backlinking methods? Not asking for anything overly-detailed. I would just like to know what works for you. Do you go the paid route, or do you simply undergo meticulous research to find free backlinking opportunities? Is there even a way to setup backlinks for free outside of article directories and blog posts? I'm still very green to BL so I'm not even sure how I want to approach it. How do you approach building backlinks?

Thank you in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Article submission is one of those bottom-feeding SEO techniques that people will keep doing forever because it's easy. Some backlinks from article directories are slightly better than no links at all. However, your resources could be spent instead on SEO that really works.

I agree with what Rand Fishkin has to say about article submission here:

I hope this helps a bit!

Yes , it definitely does ! The more backlinks you have the better it is for your Search Engine Rankings . Plus you do get some visitors coming from the articles , so backlinks from article directories do benefit you , but not as much as back links from other websites in your industry .

If you are looking for just traffic then article directories is a good option , if you want good rankings, get links on websites that are specific to your niche

      darknight,

You make a very interesting point. That is actually something I have not given much thought to. What is more important to my business' success longterm, building traffic or increasing my PR? It seems obvious that the latter is the correct answer.

With that being said, I've found it increasingly difficult to link back from websites or blogs within my own niche. For the most part, these places aren't article directories. You can't just submit an article containing a backlink and watch the PR grow. Furthermore, if you make a guest post and attempt to link back to your website or blog, the blog owner will sometimes attempt to sabatoge your efforts in one form or another. Just some of the challenges that I've faced.

What suggestions would you give for someone trying to backlink within their own niche? Thank you for your help.

Maybe so - however, if you want to rank almost overnight for a particular keyword you are targeting that has low competition - then using an article directory such as Ezine Articles will allow you to do this as they have a good reputation with Google.

Your article should appear high in the search results pretty much straight after it has been approved.

If you try and do the same thing with your own domain - it will take months before Google 'trusts' it.
