Let's say an exact match keyword word gets 2,000 searches per day. If you are in position 3 for that KW, what kind of traffic could you reasonably expect? Let's assume we have done a good job with our page title and meta desicription to optimize click through.

I recall reading something like 50% of impressions will click #1 position, 25% will lick #2 and 25% will click #3 and the remainder are split between the final 7 spots. Maybe someone more up on that can confirm.

Yes, I have heard something similar but what about the paid ads? They will also take a piece of the pie.

In my experience, just from being in #3 and then #1, it is a LARGE difference. People, short sighted beings that they are, generally click the first result they see. BUT the first 3 results get significantly more than the others on the page.

Page 2 is like, pretty much not being on google at all, from what I have seen.

Hehe...I like that. So true though. Thanks for the insight. I am currently in position #3 for one of my main KWs so nice to know that once I get to #1 I should be seeing a good traffic jump!

Here is one chart I found on the web. Take it with a grain of salt as I don't know anyone that knows for sure.
SERP Click Through Rate of Google Search Results – AOL-data.tgz – Want to Know How Many Clicks The #1 Google Position Gets? - Red Cardinal
I have a chart of my hard drive, but I couldn't find it. The percentage of the second on down is a bit lower in the web site I list here, but other than that, the numbers were not all that far off.

Remember, this is a ball park figure as there are a lot of variables. Your title and description can be crapy or enticing and that will make a lot of difference. If it is more tailored to what I am looking for, then obviously I am apt to click on that one instead of the others. But hopefully this will give you a guide.

      Hey Tim,

Thanks for sharing that great report. Very interesting indeed. Although the report does not clarify, I assume they have simply ignored PPC click throughs. Amazing the difference b/w #1 and #3 position..
