How to optimize a site for another country

Hi all,

Been trying to crack or understand how this would work.

I have a site that has been optimized for australia and we get pretty decent ranks on google.com.au.

but now we are trying to expand to the US market, but im not sure what needs to be done to optimize for google.com

I heard that changing the target country on webmaster tools will do that, but im worried that it may effect my rankings in google.com.au

Any thought on this?

    On Geotargeting - Webmaster Tools Help it says that "setting a geographic target won't impact your appearance in search results unless a user limits the scope of the search to a certain country" and if this is indeed the case then it should not affect your google.com.au rankings.

    If your site is .au, you shouldn't experience any trouble by changing the settings in your webmaster tools account. However, the safest course of action would be to start a link building campaign that includes a lot of .com's and is geographically diverse. This should give Google a better idea of where your site should be.

    Do you think where my site is hosted also has an effect on how google ranks my site? And the fact that i have an .com.au pigoen holes me into the Australian market?

    Use the search trend from the popular search engines from that country. Eg. Bauidu is more popular in china then Google. Use preffix domain for particular country, Google.de, google.fr, google.ch and so on. Hope this help you a bit.

    There are lots of nuances to optimize for specific location (let say US):
    - hosting in US
    - US whois
    - US address on the website
    - US geo zone in GWT
    - links from US sites
    - links to US sites
    - .com or .us tld
