Social Bookmarking...Where to start??

I'm new and have built a few link wheels, and keep reading on how diversity of links is best including social bookmarking. Can anyone give me a brief description of the best way to do that? And would I bookmark every link of the wheels? (They are not closed btw...very scattered).

Also should I be pinging everything? Seems to be somewhat of a debate of the effectiveness of that on here.

Thanks for everyone's help..this site is great!

You don't want to bookmark all of them in any one place.

I hear a lot of people ping. I don't. I think it pays to let the SE's pick them up naturally, this is best done by linking in from a site that already is indexed.

there is a free service called SocialMarker. It will help you get started and show you which social networks to log into.

But live Groovystar said, do not bookmark everything. You will just get banned for spamming

Another thing, I used to submit my articles to 200 article directories. This directories approved articles in 3 days maximum but same thing was happening.. Only around 20 are indexed by google.. another useless activity...

Then I went back to my abandoned autoblogs (around 280 of them). They are still online but not monitored. I have a super big hosting so I didn't noticed.... Most of these blogs have PR1 to PR2. I turned all blogs to directories. Everytime I post articles to my websites, I submitted summary to these blogs.. Google indexed them right away....

So I have my own managed directories that google love to index. I have no problem backlinking.. This is what I call investment... I don't need to wait for article directories to approve my articles anymore.. it's instant on my autoblogs...
having your own websites is a great advantage... but what if Google finds out that you are the single owner of these many blogs??? wouldn't Google ban your blogs or something like that...

What do you mean by 'I turned all blogs to directories'?

The quality of the content is more important than the ownership of the blog.

Google will ban you if they perceive that you are setting everything up simply to manipulate search results. If you are providing a "quality user experience", you should be okay.

Jason, you forgot fisherfolk. Go out on a busy head boat and just watch the crazy rituals people will go through because they believe it will help them catch fish. For example, don't ever bring a banana onboard - many anglers believe that the banana brings bad luck.

I also fished once with a guy who only baited his hook with his left hand. If his right hand touched the bait, he would throw it overboard and start over. Seems that on one trip, the only time he caught fish was when he baited the hook with his left hand. After watching him apply sunscreen with his right hand, as well as other things with smells fish don't like, I could see why it worked for him even though it had nothing to do with using his left hand.

just a word of warning on socialmarker - check the sites that they say are 'dofollow', and in fact most of them are nofollow. The rest are not indexed very well/deep.

My experience: If you do a little research, you will discover that 99% of the social bookmarking sites are not very deeply indexed, and the ones that are are all set to nofollow (even though they are listed as 'dofollow').

A lot of people who say they get indexed quickly after they SB their sites are also using wordpress for their site... well, wordpress pings pingomatic, which in my experience is usually all that is required to get googlebot to visit within minutes. And if you're using a sitemap plugin, a lot of them will ping the SE's directly everytime there is change to your sitemap (sitemap pings are not the same as rss pings)... another surefire way to get googlebot's attention. So they may be thinking it's the bookmarkng getting their sites indexed, when it's really not if they are using a blog.

    Hi Rucco,

The best way to automate with social bookmarking is to use free services such as onlywire and socialmarker. But I use bookmarking to generate traffic. It goes a long way to take care of a good working account on popular bookmarking sites such as digg, stumbleupon and sphinn and comment on other stories as well. This way, your bookmarks are respected by the community and more people are interested in viewing it.

As with indexing, StupidCupid seems to be right. I have also observed the same thing. Indexing is really way faster if you get a backlink from sites rather than bookmarking or submitting to article directories.

As for your problem, I usually bookmark just one main property, then point the others to my main bookmark. It works better for me.

    Hope that helps,

    Aira

    Hope that helps.

Having a site of your own allows you to brand yourself as an authority on a particular niche. It also permits you to offer news and information on distinct topics from different location in the world to other internet users.

Digg.com justifies there nofollow and dofollow attributes to certain links.

I guess webmasters that own these sites with nofollow prevent spam groups from google bombing there sites using Digg.com and other social bookmarking sites. thus alerting Digg to add the nofollow attribute to any links that people may use to bomb there sites.

So they do have dofollow 95% of the websites giving you a share of page rank depending on your status.

This is just a guess because I havent used this technique yet with SB. Like to hear any opions about this situation
