Addon Domain SEO question - Help Please

My partner has been spending ages trying to choose between the cheaper option of shared hosting and reseller hosting for niche websites.
I've done a lot of research and while it would seem that the general concensus is that addon domains do not affect SEO, I have read 2 posts on here that claim addon domains are affected.
The posters in question claim that they could rank easily for their initial domain but had problems for the addons.
Please could I have some feedback from you guys as to your experience with addons v reseller for SEO purposes?

Many thanks.

The add on domains need to be separate and distinct content.

If you use them to fool google, as always, you are asking for
    trouble.

Just watch what pages they point to and avoid multiple urls
    pointing to the same page.

It does not matter to google one iota if all is on the up and up.

I see no reason to have add on domains unless you like the look
for each distinct part of your website having its own domain name.

Directories are much(?) better than anything else.

I certainly would not use add ons for separate and distinct niches.

Well add on domains tend to have the same dns records etc so can be seen not to work as well.

For the small cost of upgrading to reseller account and have separate dns records etc for all your domains there is really no question is there.

Plus sell a couple of hosting packages and its free at least thats what I do. It is reseller after all and you would be surprised who would like some hosting.
