WARRIORS -- I'm Going Crazy Here....

Ok...

One of my biggest problems, like many people, is driving traffic. A benefit I currently have is that I know my problem...keyword research.

I was looking to rank an article and then backlink it to make it stick for a little while to drive some short-term traffic while I create more and more content on my site.

This particular keyword looked like a gold mine for me and I thought I could easily get this on the 1st page of google, at least for a little bit.

So, I wrote an article for it, built about 10 backlinks to that article (mainly blog commenting), and its had 7 views in 5 days.

So, I would like to see if anyone could take a look at the following information on this keyword analysis, the keyword itself, and the article to see where I went wrong.

The Keyword: "Commodity Day Trading"
- Phrase Search: 880 global, 480 local
- Exact Search: 720 global, 390 local
(remember, this is for an article so I am fine targeting less searched keywords.)

The Article I Wrote...
Commodity Day Trading - 3 Essential Tips For Commodity Day Trading

O yeah, I haven't been able to get this article in the top 20 pages....

The First Five Spots In Google Competition....
(This info found through Seo Quake)

Villain #1: This is an FAQ page of a futures broker.
-PR 3
-4 backlinks
-4,644 backlinks to the domain
-Domain is about 13 years old

Villain #2: ...... This is what is driving me crazy, it is a less than 300 word article targeting my same keyword on Ezines...not even good quality
-Of course, no PR, Links, any of that stuff

Villain #3: Info Site with a decent amount of content. Has the keyword in the domain.
-PR 2
-17 backlinks
-18 backlinks to the domain
-Domain is about 8 years old

Villain #4: Another Info Site offering a trading course and some freebies.
-PR 3
-100 backlinks
-467 backlinks to the domain
-Domain is about 8 years old

Villain #5:It's a page on about.com...No keyword in the title.
-PR 3
- 7 backlinks
-4,274 links to domain(because its about.com)
-domain is about 3 years old
.
.
.
I have NO clue how that 250 word ezine article is sitting at the #2 spot. This is the reason I chose to target this keyword with an article, I thought I could crush this...but my article is no where in site with 7 views in 5 days.

I'm sorry about the partial rant everyone, but I would really appreciate some help on this one...

The ezine article ranks because it's an authority domain and has the exact title of your phrase.

Yes, I understand this. But the point is that I have been trying to rank my own ezine article with my keyword in the title as well.

I do not know how I couldn't get on the 1st page, with a higher quality and longer article, when this guy was able to....and stick there.

Agree with this. If you see any ezine article on page 1 of Google then you can outrank it for sure.

That was the point of my post, I couldn't see how my article cannot even get in the top 20 pages.

Honestly i haven't checked personally those 5 villains. But 1 thing I can recommend you is build more backlinks but make sure you do variations of your links. Do not just blog comment, build links from different types of sites and different anchor texts(relevant of course). Build links naturally and for sure you'll outrank all of them. I didn't advice based on theory but it worked for me and works for many.

Couple of thoughts - first, that other article has age on its side. It was published in 2006.

Second, I wonder if your use of bold on phrases that did not include the words "commodity day trading" didn't hurt your ability to rank for that phrase? This is just a theory but you might test it out with another article on the same topic and bold things like "commodity day trading tips".

Third, that article has had 1076 views since Nov 2006, or roughly 25 views a day. Not sure how much of that time it's been at the #2 spot but that might be an indication of the potential traffic volume taking that spot would generate. If that volume is valuable to you, I'd backlink it a lot more using your targeted phrase as anchor text. Might take time.

Your article is really well written, by the way. Sorry it didn't rank as you'd hoped but it still could with some additional support.

    Good luck!

Thank you for your compliment on my writing. I have been thinking of doing a little free lance work to make some cash on the side, maybe in the warriors for hire section, but thats to be seen.

And THANK YOU for taking the time to read through the material I posted. I understand it was a little bit lengthy, but it is much appreciated and you gave great feedback.

I think bolding the keyword instead of random phrases would be a good approach to text, and I will definitely look to be doing that.

I now how you feel, but I think it would probably be best to stop beating yourself up over this. Maybe you should shift your focus and drive traffic to you own site.

Congrats, for me it's a good article and the layout is perfect, length also - so I've just checked the bottom article in the "most viewed" section and it got 53 views and the top one 326. You only submitted your article on June 24 - so give it a bit of time. The only thing IMHO I would really change later on with other articles, if you want to is the article title - maybe you can try and go for a longer, slightly hyped-up title. You've used your keywords in the article perfect - perhaps something like:

Commodity Day Trading - 3 Essential Tips To Help You Get Started with Commodity Day Trading and that will Prevent You from Losing Money

I know very little about trading and some other warriors will probably come up with a more catchy title - they can be very creative!

2 warriors that I can really recommend re article marketing is Tim G and Shannon Herrod.

Believe me when I tell you that I've waded through tons of article stuff. Good luck - hang in there!

My primary focus has been driving traffic to my own site. As of right now, articles are one of my ways to drive this traffic.

I am involved with backlinking my website to get it ranking, but this is a more long-term approach.

I am looking to articles to get some quick traffic and build good links

And thank you for the compliments of article quality, much appreciated.

The problem with catchier titles for me is that I am registered as a series three futures broker, so cannot give into high pressure sales tactics because of government regulation.

    Hi There,

    Couple of questions for you.

    1. Have you posted the article to Ezine alone or anywhere else?
    2. Was it 5 days ago you posted the article?

It can take Google a while to decide where to rank things. It may also not be receiving much link juice from your commenting if they have not yet been picked up.

Also if you have only posted to Ezine (not saying you have) then do not rule out the power of other sites including your own.

I have had success with Buzzle, and Article base to name a couple.

Yes, so far I have only posted my article to Ezine. And yes, it has been about 5 days since the article has been published.

Along with blog comments, I was thinking of spinning the article a bit and then posting it to a few other directories( as you have mentioned...buzzle, article base, etc.).

I think the problem is with your expectations.

Posting one article and getting a dozen links to it is unlikely to rank anything.

If you really want the traffic then go full-out. Write 25 articles and setup a blog and use social bookmarking and rss syndication to get a few hundred links to your articles.

I wouldn't even consider I'd done anything worthy of expecting decent results without having a bunch of articles out and a few hundred links back.

      Thanks for your reply Andy.

I am in the process of writing a mass amount of articles for this site, just getting some keyword research done at the moment to get organized and to hit all different types of keywords.

Those are some very old domains you're up against there. a 13 year old site that has ranked #1 for many years is going to be almost impossible to unseat. Google likes sites with staying power and that have stood the test of time.

I think your problem lies in the title. It's not catchy, and titles that aren't catchy don't get clicked on - no matter how good the article.

What are you going to tell me about commodity day trading? How to make money? How to save money? Your title doesn't present a concrete benefit. Most internet searchers want to know what you can offer them right away. they're not going to click on your title and hope you're offering the information they want.

You could have done something like "Commodity Day Trading - 3 Things Every Trader Needs to Know" or "Commodity Day Trading - 3 Tips to Make You a Winner" or "Commodity Day Trading - 3 Secrets You May Not Know". That gives the reader enough temptation to click on the link AND it has your target keyword right at the beginning (which is ideal).

    @Nicole Beckett

    Suggestions for Article Headlines

I also suggested a more catchy headline and you've made some very good suggestions for headlines - but in a previous post he pointed out that he is registered as a series 3 futures broker and must abide by there "rules".

For "regular" IM marketers my own articles with a more catchy, longer article headline has done very well. As long as you deliver in your article what you promised in your article headline according to EZA's article admission guidelines.

According to some "research" (lol) the number 7 holds magical powers, so the 7 tips or 7 steps etc and apart from 10 or 100. Then 101 and other uneven nrs like 3 and 5 will do the trick. Just joking there is no scientific evidence to prove this, but nothing prevents you from giving it a try!

I don't disagree with what many have suggested but the biggest problem I see is there is little traffic to get in the first place. Those numbers are so low (and who's to say they are even accurate to begin with) that I wouldn't trust them.

All keyword tools just give you a reference to possible searches in the future based on past searches. You can't take the numbers verbatim, they just can't be trusted since there are so many variables. And when you get so low (under 1000) they really get shaky.

These days I stay above a minimum of 3000 since it takes a lot to really go after one of the top three positions even if the competition doesn't have a lot of links or authority.

And one article with 10 links is not enough for even low competition depending on the subject matter.
