the problem with SEO in its current state

I just was reading the post about the future of SEO and something popped in my head worth discussing.

The system now 'works' but its far from being the best...

I only want to mention one issue and see what happens.

Google has x results on page one, including 7-pack and PPC. If there are lets say 10 companies fighting for a local search, and all 10 have done SEO work, it doesn't really matter because only a select few will get a majority of the traffic. Hence the problem:

No matter what happens only a select few will get a majority of the traffic. If there are 1000 SEO firms, only a few will be able to get business through any means in Google at anytime. This means that a large majority of the world, in any industry will not be able to benefit from SEO no matter what.

Traditional methods spread everything out. You have hundreds of options all get read by different people. But with everything converging to the internet and specifically Google, you limit your sales pipe to whoever is lucky enough to be on the first page of google.

If I worked really hard to develop the best marriage help material ever, does it even matter? the competition by companies driven by excellent SEO firms makes it nearly impossible for me to get traffic without focusing primarily on 'alternative' efforts like media buying etc...

Does this bother you? It definitely bothers me. As time goes by every single one of you will be ranking more and more pages, eventually there will be a majority of nearly all searched terms that have been worked on tremendously, and they will basically make up 98% of business. Yes I know there are other sites that do ads/banners/etc.. etc... But I'm just saying... Things must change, sooner than later.

Think about it and i'm interested to hear your thoughts...

I do think it's a problem that Google apparantly pandered to big brand name sites with their latest update.

Think of the first page of Google like the billboards you see when driving down the highway.

There are only so many of those spots available. If you have ever been somewhere where they just keep building them to fill every available space then people just stop seeing them so what is the point.

Every advertising medium has a limited number of good spots available. That has always been true and always will be whether it is Google's front page, the front page of your newspaper, a billboard or on tv. This is nothing new or anything that is going to change.

The way I look at it, 80% of all searches are long tailed searches. There are literally millions upon millions if not billions of searches per day. If you build out your website properly you can capture a huge part of the market. And it does not have to be for the highest searched phrases.

There will always be room for those that are doing it the right way.

so it seems you guys think everything is A-OK and things are good?

If there are 10 laundry service companies in Toronto, with all the tail variations I don't see how its possible to really get that much traffic as the years go by and 10...20...30... companies in the city all get SEO work done.

Mediums DO change, but we went from the older medium which had a long lifespan to the Google medium which seems to squish everything together.

    just thinkin about the future!

Personally I think anyone with a bussiness and a long term vision should focus on branding and contextual advertising (paid traffic via banners, content network ads, etc) to establish a real foothold within their actual market.

The problem is people using SEO as a pillar or foundation for thier online campaign or presence. Of course you should use SEO it just doesnt make sense to build a bussiness around it.

SEO is a tactic not a strategy...

    Point is:

80% of the companies will never optimize their sites PROPERLY. To assume everybody is on the SEO bandwagon is way off.

And IF people want their brand on TOP SPOTS they have to buy advertising, just like everywhere else.

But I do understand what you mean: the global domination by Google.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

Most searches are "long tail". Find the longtail in your niche, write highly relevant content that uses good keywords and related terms within it, build links to it and keep on doing it.

The trick is to not just rely on SEO, use free advertising, PPC, list building, friendships etc.

I don't think its a big problem. competitors are there, they are doing their efforts and you are yours. Efforts will not go waste. You will get good result.
