Question about 301 redirects and SEO

Hey Everyone!

I'm sure this situation has come up before, but I haven't found anything on it anywhere I've looked. Here's the deal:

I have two Drupal sites that are a few years old. They rank well for their keywords and the domains have some level of credibility. I've had a number of problems and drama with the hosting company (local) who did the sites.

I now have a NEW domain at hostgator and a new Wordpress blog (hostgator and WP are AWESOME!).

For a bunch of reasons I won't go into, I can't get the back end data from my site because I can't access the cPanel. Long story but it has to do with the way the idiots built their servers.

Here's what I need to know:

I'd like to manually repost the handful of good content and pics I have on these two old sites to the new WP site. I also have the domains and want to 301 redirect the main domains to my new site.

I'd also 301 redirect the individual content URLs to the reposted content on my NEW site.

Is this the way to do it? What happens to all the PageRank and credibility the old site has? Does it transfer and help the new one? What about things like the dmoz listing etc?

Just trying to see what my options are as well as the implications.

    Ideally you'd setup the new sites to match the old one in URL structure for the articles and images, and then transfer the old domain to point to the new sites so that the final URL is identical the ones you previously had.

    If you cannot do that, then the 301 route will definitely help you, but I've recently found out that 301s no longer carry the full weight of the original URL. So, Google will give you some love on the 301 URLs because the old ones had some love, but you won't get all the love that the old ones had.

    As for DMOZ, I don't believe a 301 is going to help get an updated listing there. You'll need to get the new site listed and the old one will eventually be de-listed if it goes away.

    Just to re-emphasize. Change the old domain to point to the new server if at all possible. Just make sure the URL structure is identical to what you had. That is the best way to keep all the love you can.

      Well I have a similar question too.

      I had my site then I changed it to a sil structure so now I have about 100 301 redirects or close to 1oo of then by now.

      Will this too affect my SEO efforts and SERP?

      Are you finding this to be true just when redirecting from one domain to another or on pages in the same domain? Last I heard from Google was that they will ignore the redirected url totally and pass everything through to the target url.

      Be interested in what information you have that this is no longer true.

    From what I know :
    if old domain have 301 redirect to new domain , the new domain will get all the backlinks power after little time. but if you check the backlinks in the new domain you cant see that..
