I've been wondering for some time, when i get some keywords and check the first page to check the competition sometimes i see the whole first page without that particular keyword anywhere, I do some backlink checking on the top 5 and non have the anchor text for that keyword. But all these sites have thousands of backlinks, is it worth going after... or will it be tough to crack the top 5 even though non have anchor text for that keyword?

an example would be "tips to weight loss" but most of the sites focus on just "weight loss"

make sure you are checking the page backlinks rather than simply the root. And, the title tag is always important. The way I see it, just go for it and see where you end up. Even for some pretty difficult competition keywords you can land on page 2 pretty quickly, as long as it's not like free credit report or health insurance quotes...For most keywords, if you put in some backlinking effort, you can be in the first couple pages within a couple days. Also, check and see if there are any web 2.0 sites, and if not make a couple articles and submit them to the top submission sites and send them out with the exact keyword in the title tag.
    Good Luck

yeah i check the page thats ranked for that keyword not the actual home page, and most of these sites have generic title names, but yeah i've always wondered about this question but never really put anything out there to see where it lands, i just kept concentrating on my other projects, its just the big number of backlinks that kinda scared me :p
