Hi Guys,

How can the top ten results in google be such a mixture of PR and backlinks ? Today i was just going though the top ten for a kieyword i was looking into and just wanted to ask you guys about the results which where #1 and #2 PR 1, then going down #3 PR 3, #4 PR 3, #5 PR 5

#3 spot has more backlinks than #1 spot ect ect..

So if you dont go by intitle, inanchor exact competition ect ect..

How can you tell how difficult it will be to rank number 1 by just looking at the top ten ??

Jim

The Google algorithm is very complex and uses 200+ ranking variables, among which PR is just one. It is reasonably well known what the ranking factors are and what their relative importance is, but your time is not best spent trying to figure out the specific mathematics that decide the rankings. The truth is , it is nearly impossible to tell reliably and exactly how easy or hard it will be to rank for a keyword by just looking at the top 10 results, or at any number of results. The available tools simply don't support the kind of analysis that would be needed. That said, the sheer number of "dofollow" backlinks from unique domains is not a bad predictor of a site's ranking for its main keyword. The devil is always in the links. This does not mean that all links are created equal: some links are immensely more powerful than others.

    I agree with Philip here.

While we cannot exactly predict why Google is doing that, there are lots of different factors. Maybe the person with more backlinks have lower quality backlinks or the first result provides more information than the next man. But to really lay it out in a cause-effect pattern will be impossible since Google's algorithm changes all the time.

But I can say that Google is now leaning more towards authority sites now or sites that provides the most information. I think that instead of thinking about what PR you should attain or how many backlinks to build, I think you should focus on making better content than the next guy. Because if your content is good, people will promote it for you and these backlinks are what Google honors.

Yes.. to really understand what exactly is separating the leaders from the followers comes down to on-page SEO and more importantly, weighty back links. I side with Phillip on the links. There are sites with 1,000 links outranked by sites with 55 HIGH quality back links..

The stats of the top five or ten sites should serve as indicator to the level of competition on the playing field. in most cases, if you see two or three sites with low PR, a few low PR back links, and not a lot of indexed pages.. chances are you can break on to the first page in due time. That's really why I agree with Phillip again, no need to try to analyze any further.. chances are it's because of the back links. PR is already a bit stale too.
