    Your press release will get to the top of google (especially if you ping it) and is a very powerful backlink to your website becausse google counts PR sites as high pagerank and authority sites.

      Yeah it helps in terms of SEO but it's primary goal is to get picked up by big news sites and generate a boatload of traffic.

    I would say not every website although it can't hurt. to be truly productive your site needs to have something worthwhile and newsworthy . Its not that hard to do nowadays and it does not have to be written content.
