Index category pages ?

Since google pretty much confirmed a while ago that you can't do "Pr sculpting" I was wondering whats the point to keep category pages no index? Why not let google index them and allow them to gain PR which is then transferred to your posts inside?

Reason I ask is all in one SEO plugin by default doesn't let them get indexed and I'm pretty sure I'm going to allow it going forward but I don't really understand the reason behind why it would be disabled by default unless this is a relic of the past when PR sculpting was allowed ( such as not allowing google to index your about/contact us/privacy page to not let them "waste" pr)

    Category pages cannot be indexed for content sites thats because if you try and do that it will come under Duplicate content. As your main post page will already be having the same content. For seo two pages with same content is not preferred. And the category page and post page will be having same content.

      Ah ok, so it's just gonna show as duplicate content huh... That does make sense. Any reason why by default it allows indexing of tags? That seems to create the same "seo problem"... I turned both off for now on my bigger site.
