Article Directory Website?

Hi, I'm creating an article directory website, and would like to hear your input.

I hate writing articles, but I love managing websites, and I thought this would be perfect for me. Do you think it'll be hard to start pulling traffic onto my website considering the other major article directories?

I'm willing to put time and effort into it, but if there's absolutely no hope for me, I would prefer to abandon the idea now rather than spending time and money.

Thanks,
Kiril.

It really depends, article directories have become rather saturated. Today you need to really separate yourselves from the others. Things like PageRank and Alexa ranking are crucial to the success of your directory. I'd really say try something else, it can take a lot of time and I've seen a lot of directories get lost as a result of poor management and using a lot of cookie cutter directory scripts.

In fact I've even seen many that have lost PR altogether as a result of using a cookie cutter theme and accepting poor quality articles.

You could also make the article directory unique by putting effort into making sure your site is indexed regularly. That would take backlinking the article directory (the articles will take care of the updated content). If you could show the articles in your directory get indexed quickly, that would be a huge benefit.

So the two things that could separate me from the other directories are:

      - Unique Theme
      - Getting articles indexed fast

Hmmm I might give it a shot.

I totally agree with this. Since I do article marketing almost exclusively, I would put my articles on your site in a heartbeat if they go indexed quickly. If your site had good PR, I would not even blink an eye at putting it up.

I created an article directory based on the prefix, "Why do ..?" I got an EMD with it and that is the U.S.P. ... it is going well and the future looks good but that is what is needed. Find a way to separate yourself. Ask, "Why would someone want to use my site as opposed to the other high PR sites that are already out there?"

Absolutely. Good IM'ers should always be on the lookout for new article directories. (I know I'm always looking for new places) If you offer something of value (only quality content accepted, indexed quickly, etc.), people will use it.

    A few other tips:

    1. Build up the PR and Alexa ranking as it is popular with a lot of article marketers (PR I understand but I do not as far as Alexa is concerned as it is so easily manipulated IMO).

    2. Start to write your own articles (backlink them too) that are going after VERY low hanging fruit as the more 1st page article placements you have the more you will be noticed and as a result, have articles submitted to your directory.

Well you pretty much need to do what you do with every other website you own. Market it, SEO, get backlinks etc. Make people think your article website is the best and it will be. I would put my articles up on your site asap if it had a good pr and approved submission fast. Its annoying when you have to wait

But fast submission is hard. If i want quality articles, I'll have to approve them manually, and depending on the amount of articles pending, it'll be long to read them all. But I guess in the beginning the submission will be fast.

Yeah It does take some time..maybe after you get enough traffic and make some dough you can higher people to read them and approve. Or make the first 10 really hard to approve like ezine but after that the rest be easier to approve for users

And which article directory script would you recommend? I'm not too sure of Wordpress anymore, cause everyone's using it now and from you guys said, cookie cutter scripts get lost.

    Thanks

Yeah I heard about articledashboard too, but I read it was exploitable and could be hacked very easily. As I am building a big long-term article database, I would like it to be secure. I'll go and check out the paid one. But if you have any other suggestions, I'll be happy to read them I want to find out about the best one, if paid I'll be gladly to invest some money, but not too expensive though.

I know a lot of directories go with this set up:

Find Training Courses - List Your Training School - How To Become

Personally, I chose to go with a unique site rather than a template.

Yah but a template has to run behind a script, and I'm looking for a script, for example Wordpress and its article directory plugins, but I heard there's none good. So I'll concentrate on the template after I found a script, but which one?

          Can you create your own?

It will take way too much time, and I don't have the required skills. I know the basic stuff of html, php and mysql, but I won't be able to create a script from scratch.

We did look custom made script at the beginning and we did get few quotes but they where just too expensive and as the directory was more like an experiment anyway then we decided to go for ready made script.

It was bit difficult to get the directory stared at first and the biggest mistake we did was approving and publishing lot of low quality articles just to get the article count up.

We have now deleted over 50 % of the articles and do no longer accept any articles from submission services, only direct submission, and we have made our submission guidelines quite strict and it has made very big difference as lot of sites have started to linking in and articles are getting syndicated.

It might seem at fist that to have general article directory would be easier to get going as there are lot more articles to choose from and you can get your article count up very fast and you can have a site with thousand s of pages or even tens of thousands of pages in few months time but I think that in long run the niche article directory will do better.

And although the quantity might be very attempting when you start out, it is always better to concentrate on quality.

We have used Article Friendly Article Publishing Script for our article directory and there is another on that looks quite good: yourarticlesdirectory.com

I do not have any personal experience with last one but with Article Friendly script I have been very happy so far.
