Hi all,

What are the general rules surrounding keyword density? Right now my keywords generally are displayed in the title, h1 tag, and within the first paragraph of the article. Because I promote jerseys, the word "jersey" is used numerous times throughout. I'm trying to figure out if I have an issue with using the word "jersey" too much.

Thanks!

That is good to have the keyword in title, h1-h3, anchor text, in the body, and in the URL. Density is not an absolute number so don't fixate on any percentages. Just get it right, stick to it, and then build some killer back links.

There are no general rules. Just make it work for the users since that is what Google is looking at anyways these days with their new Caffeine update.

Ya I heard Google is now looking more at the keyword density than before. I'm wondering if it looks at the overall page (title, h1, h2, etc), or just looks at the visible content for this?

no, you misunderstood. Keyword Density isn't a very big ranking factor.

In my opinion, the best thing you can do for rankings is develop a TRUSTED domain. Google is getting very good at sensing quality signals that your site gives off. If your site generates lots of comments for example, that is potentially a signal that tells Google your site is good. I'm sure there are many more factors, but nobody reaaallly knows except for Google

Your right, keywords and keyword phrases must appear in tags and in the page text to demonstrate relevance. As you say, use keywords at the beginning of the page and naturally all through, aim for a keyword density of approx. 3- 7% for main keywords and 1- 2% for the lesser ones. You can check your site or pages keyword density and other cool stuff online with a free spider simulation and keyword tool, from best SEO tools.
