I just checked my Google Analytics to see where people were landing on my site.
• Home Page -- 8,261 unique visitors entered the website there last month.
• Other Pages -- 69,616 (89%) of the visitors entered on pages other than the home page.
The obvious message? Optimize all your pages, not just the home page.
