How was I indexed in Google?

My husband and I have been building a new site. We were very careful not to post the URL anywhere on the internet or give it out as we did not want anyone to steal our content till it was indexed by Google.

We may have been over cautions but it happened once before and I wanted to prevent it in case Google indexed any place that copied our content and we get hit with duplicate content.

We had oursite.com but we did all the work on dev.oursite.com and to top it all off I password protected the site so no one could see/access it.

None the less, when it came time to submit the site to Google, I found this in Google:

Welcome to the Frontpage
Joomla! - the dynamic portal engine and content management system.
oursite.com/ - Cached

AHHHHH.... I know it isn't my content but it is very frustrating as I took so many steps.

It looks like it was cached over a month ago basically when I first installed Joomla as we had changed the content asap and it is still the original welcome to Joomla.

I looked on all the main search engines and could not find a single link to my site. I know for certain that my husband and I had not put the link anywhere as we over protective.

We wondered if maybe the Google toolbar would have added our url to the list but it seemed like a bit of a stretch.

1. Anyone have any suggestions on how we were included?
2. Will oursite be flagged for duplicate content (as it was the same as any other Joomla starting page)?

I think you may be worrying about some things that don't matter all that much. Duplicate content especially comes into play when your site is composed primarily of content you "took" from other sites. I wouldn't worry about the early cache. Instead, just build out your site so people love it and find it useful, and google will catch up with you soon. There is a Meta Tag called No Cache if you don't want google to cache your site or page.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

The Joomla welcome screen has been cached, not your new website

Speaking of which, I have no idea how Google finds links to new sites sometimes. In the past 12 months, I had 3 sites that got indexed with no links pointing in whatsoever. One was an HTML site, and the 2 others were Wordpress sites. The Wordpress sites ping pingomatic.com by default when you post, so that is pretty much explained for. But how do you explain the HTML sites?

Anyways, Joomla must do the same thing. When you installed it, it sent out a ping.

Don't worry about it because it's not a big deal.

I had wondered that too. I was more curious as to how Google found me then worrying that they had found me at this point. I wish I could tell for sure that it was from installing Joomla.

I would say yes. Also if you tried to find out if it was indexed by entering the URL into Google and searched for it, I think that would help to get it indexed.

I've had sites that I was working on, custom sites, not Joomla or WP, etc. I didn't 'hide' them but never published the URL anywhere - started getting calls for non-existant product. When asked how they found it - google - HA - how'd that happen?!

Dont stress to much about duplicate content. First its only content on your site that is exactly the same twice or more. Second, its syndicated content..and its good for your site trust me.

It's not really syndicated but that's besides the point. Everyone is right, don't worry about the duplicated content.. basically it's too small and too new to matter. Plus, DC is only a problem within the domain not when it's on separate domains. Google will pick up your changes soon enough. To combat this in the future read up on blocking search engine crawlers with robots.txt. It is fairly effective and very easy to do. You may want to do that now until you have updated all the content.
