Other Ways for (Good) Backlinks?

I am good with developing content but I'm always looking for new ways to create good backlinks to my stuff. I've been altering content and resubmitting to other article directories and submitting only wire and the likes of that for social bookmarking sites, but I'm not getting the rankings in the SERPs that I want just based on those methods. I don't know about doing blog commenting and forum signatures and the likes of that, people always recommend that to me but I never give it much credit. I don't know, what else should I be trying to get some other sources of backlinks to my sites and content?

Submit your content through blog/network syndication sites like AMA, UAW, SEOLinkvine, and you will see a lot of good links come your way.

Write HIGH QUALITY EXTREMELY unique articles and get them to social media sites. Soon you will have people linking to you. The best way to get rankings fast is to kickstart natural links. If you have something worth ranking #1 it is easier to get there. If you don't, you have to create your back link profile manually the whole way (and people do this with decent results).

Participate in social media. For example, I setup a Twitter account for one of my experiments and it's already resulted in a few conversions - really.

A lot of people search Twitter rather than Google because of the real-time information.

If you create really good content, Tweet it... who knows who may find it, think it's cool, and not only possibly link to it, but re-tweet it.

Don't forget about Facebook, MySpace, etc.

You really want to write articles on a related topic, backlink them to your site, and submit them to the big article directories. Submit a dozen or so a day and you have instant RELEVANT do-follow backlinks from high-PR domains back to your site.

What article directories would you recommend?

I do currently do that but I'm more looking for ways to bolster the placement of those articles in the SERPs.

Sometimes I'll try to rank my site itself for a term, but sometimes I'll let an article site like Ezine rank for me as they typically have a better shot of ranking as they're trusted in search engine eyes. Basically the issue is I'll write a number of articles, each targeting a different keyword, and I'll link back to my site, but I'm looking for how to bolster those article's positions in the SERPs. I need ways to build links/stability to that article so that it ranks better because simply linking back to that article from other article sites isn't cutting it.

One thing I am doing to get good back links is to host a bloggers event on behalf of a company in your niche... in my case it's a hotel restaurant.

The bloggers will probably mention the blog (mine) that is hosting the event and because we're inviting 20 of them, that'll be a nice number of good backlinks to you.
