Do you actually spend your time going around different sites, creating as many links pointing back to your site as possible?

It seems kind of shady, doesn't google catch on to that?

Can I really get on a front page of google by posting my links all over the place?

No - don't waste your time....

If you're in a competitive niche you definitely need links, but manually running around getting them is a waste of time when you can get them by the hundreds or thousands by publishing content in text, audio and video format and just getting good distribution.

Even if you do it manually - your competitors probably won't be so do yourself a favour and learn to get them more effectively.

Thanks, that is kind of how I felt about it. Do you have any tips on how to get good distribution on my content?

        Get accounts for:

        Social bookmarking
        Article publishing sites
        Video sharing sites

And then distribute your articles and videos - and bookmark every page of new content you create or get published.

        The numbers add up quickly.

There are also tools for doing this for you to save time -and there are lots of people who are happy to set up accounts for a small price.

          Thanks for the advice Andy.

I feel like I am in the same boat...using all of my efforts to pick up 1 back link here and 1 back link here. Frustrating to say the least!

I feel that I know how to choose a proper niche that will be easy to rank in, but my back linking efforts are occupying too much of my time for too little results.

When you say social bookmarking...I use social poster. Is that adequate?

When you say article publishing sites...I submit to Ezine and then I might spin the article and submit it to around 10 other directories. I do this once or twice per week for 1 website. Is that adequate?

As far as videos and audios, I have never used them and don't know where to begin. How do I make a video on say down comforters? And where would I submit that to?

The only links I even think about getting one by one would be from the home page of really high PR site, say.

Otherwise, you need some sort of system to get as many quality links as possible with the least amount of effort. Most people who are building backlinks consistently are using some combination of outsourcing, software, etc.

I most definitely agree with Mr. Andyhenry here...

There are so many tools, software's and techniques that you can use to automate this whole process when it comes to building links. Whether it be by:

      Directory Submission
      Social Bookmarking
      Article Marketing / Submission
      Forum Commenting
      Press Release Distribution
      Squidoo & Hubpages Lens/Hub Creation
      Local Business Listings
      Content Writing
      Search Engine Indexing
      Video Marketing
      and so-on.

When building backlinks manually, you only want to concentrate on building Authority Type Links. You would be wasting much of your time building links on crappy websites, blogs, forums and directories.

Now, if you had it all automated, you wouldn't have to worry about where your links were, (sometimes) because you would already have the tools or software setup to get you those types of links. But, every now and then you will get low PR links. Which is ok, because you didn't spend 2 hours trying to find a site, that you thought would hold some good link juice and come to find out its worthless.

After all said and done - and if you find a system or technique that works, stick with it, because: CONSISTENCY and VARIETY are KEY

Of course you can. The only wasted backlink is the backlink you don't build.

Tons and tons of us do it on a daily basis. Of course, the automation one uses the easier it is to get the backlinks, or else just outsource it to folks on oDesk of for $2 per hour.

Yes, they will help you a lot, nevertheless creating backlinks to your site needs to be a real strategy you need:

      - backlinks for social bookmarks.
      - backlinks for articles.
      - backlinks for other sites (yes, it may be a pin in the ass, but there is something called oursource).

And remember, stop thinking just in terms of backlinks to get traffic, just create good content and even if they are duplicate content, if you distribute them through the web and it is good, people will visit your site, generate content for people not just to get backlinks.

It is a complete myth that social bookmarking etc is link building. How many of those sites allow followed links or non-redirect links? Virtually none.

I agree social bookmarking has lost its link juice in my opinion. It might have worked well a year ago, but now they are probably the least effective way of getting backlinks.

In content links are, in my opinion, the best.

So article writing and syndication, press releases and some web2.0 props are where you want to go.

Mind you, you need to diversify your link building as well. Blog commenting (on relevant blogs of course ) profile links, video, audio, even directory submissions.

There is no such thing as a bad backlink, the point is to get the best bang for your buck or time.

      Cheers
