Dot info vs Dot com - A short study

I hear it said that dot info domains are less than desirable domains.

I have run a little test to satisfy myself with the following results:

There were about 98000 competing sites.

I posted the first blog about a month ago.

My site now has the FIRST two positions on page ONE of Google.

Then follow 5 Dot coms, 2 Dot orgs, and 1 Dot cas

What does this say?

Check it out. Keyword is bradley btis smoker

    Well, the main flaw with your little test is that no one is optimizing for that term... so it's going to be super easy to rank for.

    do a "allintitle:bradley btis smoker" search on google and your site is the only one, other than a craigslist ad. That tells me that you're the only person targeting that specific keyword.

      Seems like it says that you may want to find terms that not too many people are optimizing for.

    It's great that you are ranking 1&2 but, the keyword: bradley btis smoker gets no daily searches according to Market Samurai for Broad,Phrase or Exact match searches.
    The keyword: bradley smoker does much better getting about 1500 searches daily.
    Also if you type "bradley btis smoker" into Google using the inverted commas you will see only 5 other sites are competing for it.
    Unless the bradley btis smoker is a new product and people just don't know about it yet i don't think it's a great keyword as no-one is searching for it.
    If it is a new product then you are one of the first to promote it and your #1 ranking is great, if not, you may be wasting your time?

          I agree, it will be harder. I have about 5 other keywords for this product.
          You may be right. I was making the point that infos can rank along with coms orgs etc. All the domains cost me about 6 bucks so I don't have much to lose if it gets no traffic.

          I'll let you know how bradley smoker does.

      Well, you are trying to compare .com to .info as far as SEO benefits are concerned, and my point is that your term could have easily been ranked number 1 by ANY TLD... it could have been .co.uk.lmnopqrst and you could have ranked number one for it because you'd be the ONLY person trying.


      Try to rank a .info for a search term that gets traffic, then compare .com to .info and that would be a better test.

      (FWIW, i don't really know which one is better, my my instinct says .com if only for the social proof aspect of the user.)

      Exactly my point.

      except that even when you type it in quotes, that doesn't mean that those sites are competing for the term, they just happen to use that exact phrase somewhere on their page.

      a better way to tell if someone is actually trying for a term is to use the "allintitle:" prefix and see who is actually using the term in the title tag of their page.

      If it's in the title tag, it's safe to say someone is trying to optimize for it.





      And a question for the OP: Are you actually seeing a decent volume of traffic from this keyword?

      I'm not saying it's a bad keyword, I'm just saying that it's not a competitive keyword, and generally keywords that are profitable have competition. There is no point in trying to rank for a keyword that no one is searching for. The #1 spot on google does you no good if no one looks at it.

    I bought my .info in 2007 and it's had no problems in ranking well for good search terms.

    I can't say it's any different to my .com's. I just don't know why .info's got a bad name, it's turning into an urban myth that's just not backed up by facts.

      I have several domains. Some are .com and some are .info. I've never done a scientific test, but I can tell you that I perform on page SEO and promote similarly.

      In my experience it is difficult to get a newer .info to rank well for competitive terms in Google. It doesn't seem to matter as much in Bing and Yahoo. I have had much better results with .com (especially for newer sites.)

        Thanks, Monkey. That's good to keep in mind.

        Until it proves itself one way or another, I can get 10 infos to 1 com. In the past 2 months, I have put up 50 sites, so $50 compared to $500. I'm hoping that the law of averages will be on my side. (fingers crossed)

          That is the reason I have several .info sites. I bought a bunch of domains a little over a year ago through Godaddy for $0.99. The problem is they renew at full price. I let a good chunk of them go due to them not ranking as well as the .com site, but as I mentioned, I didn't perform a scientific experiment with comparing like keyword domains.

          My guess is that if you get a keyword rich .info for a new, or not competitive item (niche.), and you put in the work you can be an authority site.

      The fact that people buy more dot coms than dot infos, it stands to
      reason that dot coms will show more.

      But if one buys a dot info and does the same stuff as anyone else
      with a dot com, the dot info is just as good in search engines.

      And if you do a lot of searches, you will find dot infos.

      My favorite dot info in prchecker.info
      Nothing beats it for pagerank checker or similar search.

      Dot info is rapidly rising to be a great alternative to a dot com.

      I would hesitate to do a dot biz. Just my gut feeling. I have never
      shaken the fact that these used to be looked on as spammed sites.
      If I relied on type in traffic from my customers, I would not hesitate to
      do the dot biz, if I had a lot of print advertising.

      But I have seen many dot biz's show up as well.

    Hello guys, Well from my experience is that .info can rank high.. I have a .info at number 4 for fairly competitive keyword but the problem is its rarely gets traffic.. My webmaster tool says : 720 Impressions and only 36 clicks.. N its number # 4 for that term.. I think ppl do not want to click on .info domains..what ur experience ??
