HELP: Will moving my site to WordPress platform kill SEO rankings?

I have a static HTML site that is ranked high for my desired keywords and has built up a significant number of backlinks naturally. But its appearance is drab, and I want to convert it to a WP platform.

This will change the URLS from domain(dot)com/pagename(dot)htm to the WordPress convention domain(dot)com/parentpage/pagename (I have 2-level navigation).

Will I lose all my backlinks after switching to WordPress? Will people get 404 error messages if they happen upon an old link? Will my site drop in the SE rankings?

I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could give me advice on how to approach the migration in a way that preserves most of the links (keeps them the same)?

Thanks.

There is reason to believe there could be temporary loss of rankings unfortunately. Personally, I always plan medium term, and I go ahead and make changes. You may be able to keep some of your html pages intact or do permanent directs to the new blog pages. And of course think through how you can keep your content relatively consistent during the transition, especially for pages that have a lot of external links pointing toward them.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.
