Hello warriors..

For example if I have some niche site and I receive about 30 -40 backlinks from PR 6 and higher but those backlink are from edu and gov domains and have PR of 6 to 8 but those site they not relevant to my site would Google count those backlinks from high PR sites or no...?
Also do you think that those backlinks would boost SEO ranking...?

Links don't have to be relevant. From my understanding, they're just more powerful if they're relevant.

Of course, all links have value, but relevant links are more valuable from SEO point of view.

A link is a link. It is the anchor text and page rank that matters. In my experience I can tell you that it's never mattered whether the sites i get links from were relevant or not. A lot of people have different opinions of course and that's just mine, based on my experience.

        Hi radivoj,

Most backlinks have value, but not all do. If the link is from a page that is not indexed it may have no value whatsoever. Those links that do have value are not all equal in value, some have very little value while others are extremely valuable. Some links may have been completely devalued by the search engines, even though they are from a page that is indexed.

Some links have low value and some have high value. The true PageRank, which isn't displayed in real time, is one of the factors that weights the value of the link, there is also relevance and trust factors that all combine to influence the actual value of the backlink.

Those that say all links have value are wrong, and those that say all links have the same value are also wrong. Those that say relevance doesn't matter are wrong as well, you will never see any SERP ranking benefit until you channel that link value through a relevant backlink.

The notion that "relevance doesn't matter" seems to come from folks that do not understand how Google determines relevance. They typically are caught up in some misconception about website topics which have little or nothing to do with how search engines determine relevance.

        • What most people don't seem to get is that every inbound link to your URL has the possibility of affecting MANY ranking factors for your URL.

I don't claim to know all 200+ of Google's ranking factors and the following is to be taken as a what if (not a "what is") scenario. But it might be that some of the things Google is looking at for each inbound link are:

          - PR of the URL linking to your URL?
          - Is the link text of that inbound link an exact match for the search phrase?
          - What is the keyword density of the serach phrase within the link text?
          - Are LSI synonyms for the keywords in the search phrase used in the link text?
          - How does the URL linking to your URL rank for the search phrase? (i.e. does it contain the search phrase or synonyms in ITS title, h1, content, in link text of ITS inbound links, etc.)
          - Does the search phrase or it's synonyms appear in close proximity to your link on the page linking to you?
          - Total number of followed links to your URL
          - Total number of different domains with followed links to your URL
          yada yada yada

My point is there might be 2 or 3 dozen ranking factors (who knows) that "can" be affected by a single inbound link. Some links will score better on those ranking factors than others. Some links will positively affect more of those ranking factors than others.

There is rarely such a thing as a "bad link". So typically any link (except one you get caught buying) is a good one. Even links with "click here" as link text will help your page in some likely very small way. It is still passing you PR.

      Hi wmm8468,

There is no such thing as "site" relevancy in the eyes of Google, there is only page relevancy. And yes, page relevancy is a must. And yes, Angela has stressed the importance of adding "relevant" keyword anchor text to the pages where you place your backlinks.

Relevancy is a must and I believe Angela agrees with this assertion. The problem is that many folks do not understand how Google determines relevancy, and that is why they have incorrectly assessed the importance of relevancy.
