Hi Guys,

I dont know much about SEO, but have a few questions regarding SEO for my ecommerce website (computer and phone accessories).

This is for my real business, not affiliate marketing. (sorry cannot give link just yet)

How do you target certain keywords for website of this nature, when there is 10 product categories and more then 100 products? or do you try and list of the front page of google for a few product types only?

i dont know where to start

Hire a freelancer to write a 300 word article about each product

craft a resource box using product names as anchor text

submit articles to article directories as they come in

webdango gave you a good start, but I would also include video and photos of the product and then allow for reviews so you can take advantage of UGC. The UGC is where you are gonna get a lot of free content that will help boost the long tail content, and eventually searches. Jennita over at seomoz wrote a nice little post about some important discussions that went on at SES last week. There is a great breakdown there of what actually went on throughout, but specific to UGC check out #3 here to get your wheels turning.

I've been optimizing Ecommerce sites for quite awhile. It all depends how competitive your market is for longer terms. I do mostly country specific type stuff however I have seen a huge amount of growth in the sites rankings spreading the PR around the sites categories and competitive product terms. You'll need to first of all focus on driving a ton of related links to your homepage first to get that up.

I first of all focussed on the homepage for a good few months, got that ranking then continued to work my way accross the site. Now we rank for almost all of our internal pages really well and we are the top site in the country for natural health.

The links I mainly got surprising enough were directory links. We made sure our website was fully structured around content though. Our website has more content then any of our competitors and we get alot of solid links from other health sites as a result.

Once you have built the major links for the homepage etc I would say go ahead and outsource article marketing etc. If you shoot me a PM I can give you a copy of the article marketing plan we just started using. Raised natural traffic by 20% last month and all outsourced.

Hire a SEO Expert and he will do all the SEO work (On Page / Off Page) for you because you already said that you don't know much more about SEO.

Ditto what Peter said about videos. Where it's appropriate, make a short video n how to use the product and submit to video directories through TubeMogul. Also put a copy on the product page.

But they need to be high quality and look professional to represent the professioanlism of you store, not some tossed together Powerpoint slides (guilty).

This is the problem we've had. We've got the equipment and the video editing software, but the end result is less than professional. Some SEO editorials have said that 'having any video is better than having no video' which may or may not be true. You don't want to work so hard on your site and company, only to have it diminished by a video that looks like you made it in your parent's garage. Any ideas on this from successful e-com video makers??

As far as SEO, this is SOOO true. Our couple of home-brew videos on You Tube, when linked back from your product page and combined with great meta keywords will rank you (a thumbnail, your video title, description and link) higher and quicker than you could do with your own site. Also, be sure to create a You Tube Channel -- this way your potential customers can look at all your videos in one place - and (this is a very big AND) You Tube provides analytics for your channel to monitor traffic. If you run an e-com site with products that you can demonstrate, a video is a must-have....

Very true. I would probably be less worried about videos I was submitting to video directories, but I would have high standards for any video I had on the site itself.

What you need to do for any site you make:
The main page is for your main keywords. Do on page optimization and put keywords that you want to rank for in your content and in your links.
Then each page that you have a link for are sub pages that link together as well.

Its hard to explain, but look at a site like ikea to get an idea. Each page is linked together, this is on page seo. Each link is a keyword.
      So for example
the main page would be something like uk furniture or something
then on the main page you would have sofas, desks, chairs, tables, whatever else.
Then your content would include oh we are a uk furniture store offering the best sofas, desks, chairs and tables..
Have links to each page you created for sofas, desks, chairs, and tables.
Then on your sub pages you would have uk furniture dot com/ chairs
or uk furniture dot com /sofas
You get what I'm saying? Im all over the place its hard to explain over the internet.

I particularly like the Alt-image attribute. This is so important because search engines to find images so much faster than text, which will help you get traffic if you have any relevant photos of your products.

I ran a site selling PDA accessories for several and my advice would be

    1. Make sure your shopping cart is truely SEO friendly.
    2. I would target long tail keywords for your products. Otherwise you would be coming up against the likes of Newegg.com and Amazon.com
