I'm needing some advice from some of you more experienced warriors.

My brother in law has a band called "the kingdom". They've had a site made up for them which is musicthekingdom.com

He's approached me to see if I could help him out with the seo to try and get a good ranking.

So here's my dilemma: I've set up a few websites and got some 1st first page rankings for them, but none of them were ever in a really competitive niche.... Well nothing even close to the keyword "the kingdom".

The band is located in Australia, so what I want to know is, if I buy a .com.au domain, will it be easier to rank for searches done in Australia? And would it be even be possible to get a good ranking for that term or should he target something like "the kingdom music"?

Any thoughts or feedback would be apprecited!

Thanks in advance Davo...

I think the .com would be the more powerful TLD to get since Im sure he wants his band to be world wide known. That being said get the .au and 301 redirect it to the .com. Make sure its a 301 and not 302 (301 is permanent redirect, 302 is temporary redirect). I checked the site and noticed its actually a Wordpress Blog so install the "All in One SEO pack" plugin so you can start optimizing the posts.

Just looking over the current results for The Kingdom, The Kingdom Band and The Kingdom Music, you are def going to have to start adding those keywords to the site and in anchor text back to the site. After you have the site optimized, then start using social sites like Facebook, twitter and myspace to help promote the band, make sure to use targeted keywords in those posts and link back to the site. And then let the fans and social media work its wonders.

Sure the keywords seem hard but the competition isnt really that difficult so if you lay the ground work right then you should have no problems.

    Hi !

Good questions. However, WHY would they want to be ranked for THE KINGDOM? Unless their band is well known and they want their fans to find their website when they search for the band name it doesn't make much sense to me to try to rank for that name.

I play in a band my self and I would much rather be ranked for "Best Heavy Metal Band" or something that people actually search for...

    Just my 2 cents...

Absolutely, there is not point in increasing serp ranking for the word ' kingdom' unless they are a big brand and people would search them by name. If they are not so popular, it is advisable to do some keyword research and find more relevant keywords and do SEO activities to boost serp ranking for those keywords.

      Thanks for the feed back

Completely agree about ranking for othe keywords too.

They want to be ranked for that word though b/c the done a few gigs around the country and are always being told that they can't be found under that keyword.

But will definately be looking at getting ranked for other keywords!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions XD

I"ll just get .com and personally wont use 301 redirect you dnt need it just getting a local host will do enough and emphasis on location within webmaster tools and body content.

Just make sure your main keywords show up more than the rest of the content. Then use the word australia (and city which really emphasis on location target) in title (which is better) and or description to hone it in for auzzy target and then the rest will go global for the like of the keyword.

so you will rank keyword for both auzzy and global doing it this way.

Im ranking 1st page in nz and ranking third for a competitive keyword on global the domain is a from a free host in america .com

...but the thing is: It doesn't matter if you have au.com or .com or dot.cz or dot net if no one is searching for the terms you optimize your webiste for. A top ranking is not worth anything unless it is for a term actually searched for.
