Okay first things first. I see this so often. Beginers getting so overwhelmed by SEO concepts they forget the basics. So I am gonna through some of the basics back out there.

In some wordpress themes and plugins you need to watch for
<metaname="robots" content="noindex,follow" />
You don't want it to say "no index" that makes sure google doesn't index your page. But several plugins will automatically set this.
If each of these contains your keyword or keyword phrase. Most of the time you will hit first page ranks in a micro niche site.
To get the number one spot.
You need strong unique content containing your keyword or keyword phrase. and Backlinks
