Too Many Backlinks, Too Quickly?

I had a website ranking #6 for it's main keyword. It wasn't moving at all for a couple of weeks and Yahoo Site Explorer was finding a few more of my backlinks each day. Suddenly one day it found 400 backlinks, then 200 the next which made me jump from 400 backlinks to just over 1,000. At the same my site dropped from #6 into the 50's. I can't for the life of me get it to recover. I've gotten it to the very top of page 4 but it always falls back onto the 5th page. I've checked over my on-page seo, tried different WP themes, tried not building new links, tried building new links, but I just can't seem to recover. Fresh content is added daily but Google just de-indexed about 60 of my pages (none of my vital pages though). I guess I just don't get what I did wrong besides getting a bunch of backlinks in just a day or two (although it wasn't on purpose).

If it were that easy to knock your site off the front page, then competitors would be backlinking each other into oblivion.

That's what I was thinking as well. I just can't figure out why I suddenly bombed without doing anything major and why I can't recover from it.

Maybe you were artificially on page one because of your pace, and as your backlinking pace declined...you settled to where you should be.

Where were the backlinks coming from?

If it was articles, was it the same article?

If it was forum posts, were they spammy?

It's not likely such a low number would present ranking issues unless the location and quality of links are easily identified as bad AND there are no or very few quality links present.

Steven is correct, but there are several aspects to the search algorithm. Backlinks have quality scores and if your site appears to have backlinks ONLY from sources typically used by generators OR the content (to include the anchor text) of backlinks is identical or close enough to be considered the same, they will have a negative impact on your site's rank. It's hard to hook up your competitors if they have solid backlinks. If they have lousy ones, you most certainly can impact their rank if that's the kind of person you are. With that said, those sites do not typically rank highly anyway so it's a strange thing to debate.

Get some good quality backlinks at a natural pace. 100% original articles to solid article directories will raise your link quality score. Be sure to vary the resource box for each article including the anchor text.

Radix asks good questions... I would also wonder where are they backlinks from? If they are super spammy that may be why.

I tend to build around 400 to 500 links to each of my sites per month and have never encountered a penalty like this - also thing about sites with the "digg effect" - getting hundreds or thousands of backlinks in a very short time - these sites aren't penalized - i think this all leads back to the "quality" of the links that were built.

      Hi deloriagod,

This same question seems to appear about once a week on this forum. And in most cases it is just QDF playing a mind trick on new webmasters.

It's likely that you never actually earned that ranking you you thought you had, instead it was just a temporary boost from QDF. Once the temporary boost wears off, your page sinks to it's currently earned SERP ranking.

You have not been penalized, you have done nothing wrong, you just haven't yet earned the rankings you thought you had. Get busy promoting your website and improving your content to earn that higher ranking!

You want to go viral. You want as many links as possible.
There is no natural look or some mythical number.

No penalty for backlinking, but you did experience a penalty.

        Maybe some glossed over this:
Google just de-indexed about 60 of my pages
That is a penalty, but not from backlinking. It's not easy to get
someone slammed due to sites linking in. I'm sure it happens in
the rarest of cases, but google flat out says it's dang near impossible.

However, de-indexing is a symptom of a major disease.

Funny how people create some web pages, then swear they were
de-indexed for something not even related to de-indexing. And can't
        see anything else wrong.

There are none so blind as those who will not see. Take a look at
google's webmaster guidelines. There are numerous reasons, all related
to quality of content, quality of visitor experience, and following all
        google guidelines.

          Hi Paul,

Or... it might just be a data refresh or index rebuild. They happen on a fairly frequent basis and it isn't unusual to see pages that were recently indexed drop off for a few days, or even a few weeks, only to return after rebuilds catch up.

there was a service here that had like 2400 blog comment links done in a couple days.

from reading this... is that a no no?

I tried to break them up by sending the 2400 to 3 sites and mixing the anchor by 2-3 variations. So each page gets about 800 links.

I mean google won't find ALL of the links all at the same time right?

If some of those links are still existing in 2 months your rankings should increase. If they all disappear then you'll look like a spammer and be completely de-indexed.

    my opinion.

It's not as easy as that. Many of your backlinks disappear. You can't
help what happens to backlinks, except backlinks you own. That would
never get you de-indexed on its own. Like the first replier said....
if it were that easy, we'd be spamming links like a mad man on a few
      people.

  • If your pages are de-ndexed, it is surely not because of the links. If G finds spammy links it just flushes those links, and automatically your ranking position will be decreased. But in your case, there are some other reason for which the indexed pages are de-indexed.
