Hi Everyone,

I REALLY don't understand something and would LOVE it if you guys could shed some light. I have been trying to rank for one of my main keywords and things seemed to be going well, on 8/27 I was ranked #46 and then on 8/31 I went to #43 but now I am no longer in the top 200 websites!! I have included some information below regarding dates and corresponding number of backlinks. What is strange to me is that as the number of backlinks grows my ranking begins to decline. This is completely counter-intuitive to me. I am uncertain what to do and how to proceed.

Date: Google Position Backlinks
2010-09-15 Not Ranked 310
2010-09-12 74 292
2010-09-08 78 281
2010-09-02 44 284
2010-08-31 43 267
2010-08-27 46 201

The methods I am using to obtain links are as follows:
1. Do Follow Blog commenting
2. Forum Signature posts in niche-related forums. (I have just started to provide approximately 5 comments per day in 4 separate forums within my niche).
3. Article Marketing using both SEO Link Vine and Article Marketing Automation (just started this process about a week ago).
4. Regular articles posted on Hubpages, Squidoo, Ezine, my Wordpress Blog, and multi-user blogs or blogs you can create in niche-specific forums. I have started to post approximately 7 - 10 articles per week with 1-3 backlinks per article. For each of these articles, I ping the content, social bookmark the content, create an RSS feed (if one does not already exist) and submit the RSS feed to RSS aggregator websites.
5. Answer questions on Yahoo Answers (2 per day)
7. I created an additional website with my main keyword in the domain name and began linking back to my website. (just started this)
8. Creating 1 forum profile with anchor text per day

Should I be doing more? If so, what specifically do you recommend? Am I doing the RIGHT things? If not, what processes should I change.

I really appreciate this forum. I regularly read posts and have learned a great deal from everyone here. Thanks in advance!

Why would you create an additional website and link back to it? I am not sure I understand the logic behind that. what does it have to do with SEO'ing the primary site?

          Research your competition's backlinks.
Then submit link requests to the better ones.
Be sure you have something to offer, such as low prices, unique content, etc.
A lot of it is a numbers game. Keep trying even though 99% reject you.
Eventually you will get some quality links.

              Hi sunbrst30,

Congratulations, you have carried on the tradition of the once a week (at least) post on this board asking "why my ranking dropped" after having reached a higher ranking (temporarily).

It's called QDF (Query Deserves Freshness), it's a temporary boost in ranking, when you post new pages, that wears off after a brief period and then your page sinks to it currently earned rankings.

You haven't done anything wrong, it's not a penalty, it's part of Google's algorithm and all new pages are subject to that same algorithm. Just continue to promote and improve your content to earn a better ranking.

                To dburk:
My site is around two years old now and my rankings have been all over the place for at least 5 months. But for a few weeks it seemed as though things were beginning to stabilize and then improve. All of a sudden, my rankings for this primary keyword have dropped significantly. This is an ecommerce website, so my site only changes when I add new products, remove products or add an informative article. I would love it if you could help me to understand how my website would have issues with Query Deserves Freshness.

One thing I am not doing very much of is varying the anchor text of my backlinks. I do it a bit (via Yahoo Answers as they do not allow for anchor text links) and a bit in my articles. Could this be one of the reasons this is happening as nakmuay7 has written?

I really appreciate all of the help everyone is providing. It is very much appreciated!

                  Hi sunbrst30,

First let me say that search engines index and rank individual web pages, not websites, therefor you website's age isn't germane, while you web page's age may well be. And more specifically the age of your backlinks within Google's index is of paramount importance.

Varying your anchor text may be useful, but is not a cause for concern as suggested by nakmuay7. I have never seen, nor even heard of anyone being penalized "for overuse of the key search term".

What does happen is the devaluing of spamdexing. If you spam a bunch of worthless backlinks they might give you a temporary boost before they are located and devalued or deleted.

What you are looking for is aging your site and the backlinks to your site. And having a link from an authoritative site will surpass all of the time you spent developing the many lower grade backlinks. 1 quality link can be better than 1000 links on lower end sites. It's not quantity that makes the difference, but quality.

sorry to add but are u sure you arnt being penalized somewhere for overuse of the key search term??

Simple links are never enough they have to be relevant to your site or be very closely related in a direct way.

dont worry about PR as much as quality content authoritarian sites with good anchors

#7 - I'd be careful with that. I was warned not to do that. Google apparently doesn't like you linking to your own sites.

Look up "google dance" on this forum. In my opinion and experience that is what is happening to you at the moment. It's a good thing and whatever you do, DON'T STOP BUILDING BACKLINKS! You need to keep up with your backlinks now more so than ever.

If you do keep up with it, your site will return in an even higher position.

The first thing to comment in any Search Engine Optimisation plan is to conceive whether the inward links developed are from a well demonstrated web site. This influences its gross value.
