Alright, I have several sites, each making a bit of money. However, some of them are in huge niches, and all of the links that work for smaller, more micro niche type sites, don't have nearly the affect on these types of sites.

How can I get some real, high quality links?

I've heard that buying them is pretty much the only way, but there must be other ways.

I've also seen that my competitor sites also have sites that have very little reason to exist linking to them and no where else - leading me to believe that they created several sites soley to get backlinks. I've heard this is a good strategy, however, a risky one as well.

If anyone could demystify this, it would be very appreciated!

The easiest way without buying them is creating a truely viral piece of content. This will be niche dependent. You then get this spreading through social sites like Digg, Twitter, Stumbleupon and Facebook.

If you want to go for something a little less volatile, give guest blogging a try. Once again you need good content for anyone to be interested.

Both of these methods have the advantage of directly creating traffic to your site.

It depends on exactly what kind of links you're looking for. It sounds like you need more volume for the larger sites.

There are blog networks where the blogs have homepage PR and you can submit individual articles or snippets. There are article directories and blog networks where you can submit articles for a greater volume of links. You could distribute free press releases. Or you can get volume from forum profile links (may need automation/outsourcing for volume). Some also use Web 2.0 properties to create backlinks (can be too much work for volume in my estimation).

The best ones will be ones you get in the strangest ways or from producing super-duper quality content. Google has done a pretty good job ranking sites. The way it works, you get rewarded for having a high quality site, so quality it deserves to rank #1.

When you have content that is worthwhile enough, you can get important sites to write about it. Some people spend months positioning themselves for this, but it can be well worth it.
