It really depends on how many links are on the page you're trying to get PR from.
    Ex.
Website 1 (PR5) has 120 links on the page, one of them being yours
Website 2 (PR5) has 120 links on the page, one of them being yours
Website 3 (PR2) Has 3 links on the page, one of them being yours

The one link from Website 3 will send you more PR than both websites 1 and 2 combined - assuming none of the links have nofollow, of course.

    Good Luck!

Well I think backlinks from high pr website are more useful... But this does not mean that backlinks from low pr website are useless....Its depends how one develops an seo strategy for linkbuilding.

try to continuously build backlink to your site, PR is never a guarantee that you will top the google search engine.

I think, you can not predict that "10" PR having or "50" normal PR having back links are very much good for your website because search engines only give previlage to that website which has theme based back links......

People care to much about PR. It's not the end-all-be-all. There should never be a set amount of links you try to attain. Keep building, always.

In the time it takes for your to worry about it I will have built ten links, the site might be a pr of 7 but you get a link on a page with no rank so it does not really matter. Just crank out the links.

Can you ever have too many links? Or is it just a numbers game and anchor text?

I don't think you can have too many links... The more, the merrier. Links can't hurt you and I know there will be some that will disagree.

It is more than a numbers game, it is a quality game and getting in context anchor text links from high PR pages (not domains) is the highest quality links you can get and they will do a world of good for your rankings.

In reality, you often need both.

Backlinks from low or no PR sites are usually easier to obtain in higher quantities (article distribution, profile links, bookmarking, press releases, etc.). Backlinks from higher PR sites are generally very helpful, but you often have to get them one link at a time.

So, it's a tradeoff and the strategy you need to use will depend on the competition for each keyword. For medium and low competition phrases, sometimes you just need more links. For higher competition phrases, links from higher PR sites may push you past the competition.

  • This question is impossible to answer. There are too many OTHER variables associated with a link would determine which are better like the relevance of the page linked from to the page linked to, the number of outbound links on the page linked from, the link text used in the links, the domain trust and authority of the page linked from, etc. The list goes on.

Judging links based solely on PR is a terrible idea.

Of course, if you're looking for a "batter" back link you can always mix 1 cup of cornmeal, a pinch of salt, one teaspoon of pepper... beat 3 eggs... allow the link to soak in the egg for at least 30 minutes, then roll in the cornmeal/salt/pepper mix. Deep fry for 10 minutes. Serve immediately

For me don't always rely on high PR, i would suggest you to build quality backlinks to your site, create quality content that search engines will like you, these are the basic or the simple way in promoting your site in search engine.

This has been a fun thread. Lots of great opinions and info.

I agree... Having high PR is not necessary to rank, and too much emphasis is placed on it.
One of my listings is on page 1 for a highly competitive keyword with 30 Million SERPS, and I have a PR of 0 on that one!
Or simply look at any top ranked sites - not all of them have high PR.

Since, the original question was just how to increase PR:
Here's a cool page that describes more about the details of PR:

You're right a lot of emphasis is put on high pr sites. But that's for a good reason. High pr sites will increase your rankings. However these sites are limited in everyone's ability to get links from these sites.

Try to mix it up. Don't spend all of your time just looking for high pr sites. Get low pr sites to link to you as well.
