I'm setting up an offline website + I have a basic seo question...

Is there an seo rule of thumb about this?...

This is a LOCAL offline website I am trying get high up on the results page for a certain keyword phrase.

I put my keyword phrase in quotes, and it comes up with 33K pages.

Is that too difficult to get onto the top 10 (pg.1)?

Are there general parameters to look out for, when assessing the likelihood of getting onto pg.1?

Also, there are plenty of ads that come up too (competitive).

G-keyword tool says there are 49K+ local monthly searches + 74K global monthly searches + cpc estimate is $4.06

Just want to know what parameters to stay within + what to avoid (because it would be too hard to get on pg 1)

Thanks!!

You should already be doing this on your own sites.

How can you show prospects what you can do for
them if you can't show sites you have up that are
      making money.

      Make that plenty of money.

I wouldn't even talk to you with out a track record
      of successes.

Make yourself profitable first then work with others.

Thats not much information to go on. When doing KW research, you have to watch for two things. First; number of competitors. Second; the strength of the competition. I find that strength of competitors is more important to watch out for than numbers.

      Hi Kevin...

You're making a lot of assumptions, I think.

Who said I was selling offline services (yet)?

Even though you posted before asking me a basic question, I'll answer it...

I am trying to learn / figure out all this stuff BEFORE I go out + sell my "services."
      I'm creating a "practice" site.

No offense, but how the hell are you posting if you don't know what you are talking about?

The operative word here is DOING. I am trying to learn by DOING -- on my own, NOT selling my services to anyone (yet). That is the whole point of this thread (+ this forum!). How else can I even attempt to go from zero to hero? I'm sure (even) you would approve.

      Cheers.

Some guys seem to go on here just to make people look like dumbasses to make themselves feel better.

I like what carpetmuncher and Bill_Z are saying though. PLUS, sometimes just trying to rank for the keyword is the only way to find out. Research is very important of course, but I've surprised myself a lot by attempting to rank for difficult phrases as well and getting high in the rankings.

The best way to determine if you can get on first page is to evaluate the pages on the first page - that other stuff doesn't really mean much. Evaluate their:

    PR
    Domain Age
Number of backlinks to their domain
Number of backlinks to the page that is ranking
If those backlinks are anchored specifically for that keyword
If the site is optimized for the keyword (on-site)

Also - IMO it's best to do keyword search by exact match, not broad match. I'm assuming those numbers you gave are for broad match, as they are quite high for an "offline business" keyword.

If you want you can PM me your domain and the keywords and I will take a look.

      Hi,

He said the keyword was in phrase match. The thing is it doesn't overly matter how many people are competing with you its how well opitimized that competiton is. I heard someone say here you could have 3 million competing pages but if they don't know about SEO, you can beat them but at the same time you could have 2000 highly optimized or .gov, .edu sites and not stand a chance. Its what your competition does, not how many there are.

I also agree maybe you need to figure this keyword research stuff out before you help offline businesses.

Like Richard and Bill said, it's all about page one.

If you are trying to get a local company ranked nationally for a keyword, that's one thing.

If you're trying to get a local company to rank for local searches, that is usually pretty easy. A lot of times all it takes is getting their own web site set up right.

If there is a competitor that is aggressively promoting their site, you'll be able to tell pretty quickly.

The other thing is that since it's been so long since the last PR update, looking at the Google toolbar reported pagerank (or anything that pulls from it like SEOQuake) really doesn't give you a true picture of the strength of the ranking pages. That is six months that someone could have been using to build backlinks.

Right now I'm using SEOMoz's toolbar and their page authority for keyword research I'm doing right now.
