Bookmarking or Backlinking, or Both?

I am amazed at the knowledge that gushes from these pages and I need to tap into some.

I'm building my first of many affiliate sales blogs and want to get moving in the right direction asap.

I am a little ways past noob but yet to make any decent $ online. I'm on a budget and would like to know if Bookmarking is more important than Backlinking?

Would either BMD or Backlink Booster, by 'The Manic Marketer', be a quicker ROI? Which one first?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all the outstanding info and insite,

Bookmarking is some sort of backlinking. However you won't be able to rank for any decent keyword only by bookmarking.

Good backlinks are the key to improving your search engine ranking. Bookmarking can bring you in some direct traffic but in essence it is just another way of getting backlinks. However, the main point of bookmarking is to get the search engines interested in your pages and share them with like minded people. They are not of high enough quality though to boost your search engine rankings by very much. In short, you should do both..

      Thanks for the input.

What else should I be doing and in what order, please.

I'm drawing a blank now that I'm finally,

"Learning by Doing, instead of Learning by Learning".
(I got that from someone in WF, thank you, and am finally using it.)

      Actual quote was,
"Quit Learning by Learning and Start Learning by Doing".

      Thanks again!

      Help anybody?

Those quotes are excellent advice.. Here is what I suggest you do.

        1. Rather than think of your site promotion as trying to gain backlinks to your site, treat it as a "per webpage" thing. Break it down to what keywords you want to rank highly for and what pages you want to rank for those keywords.

        2. For each webpage you promote, check out the top 10 on Google for the keyword(s) you are targeting. Find out where they get their backlinks from and try to work out how they got them. Sometimes you will find some real easy good sources of backlinks this way. Do as much competitive analysis as you can and Market Samurai can be a great help with this.

        3. Create a plan of attack for each webpage you want to promote that takes into consideration your competitive analysis in point 2. Work out how many backlinks you will need and where from? what anchor text?

        4. Other ways of gaining backlinks include:

        Article marketing
        Blog commenting
        Link exchanges
        Social bookmarking
Creating networks of free blog services
Creating profiles on high PR sites (don't spam)
Guest authoring on sites like ehow, about etc..
        Press releases

        5. By far the best way of gaining backlinks though is to ensure your content has something in it that can potentially go viral. It can be something as simple as creating a clear diagram about how to do something. If somebody will find it useful then you can bet your bottom dollar that word will spread (via backlinks), the more it spreads the higher the viral impact it will have.

Some of the best ways of creating this sort of link bait are..
        Create a forum
        Design unique diagrams
        Make Interesting videos
        Create relevant software
        Give away free ebooks
        Create tutorials
        Use good and interesting images

Make something of value and interest in your niche and you have the potential to gain vast amounts of backlinks naturally.

Steve offered great & thorough advice.

The only thing I would add is to make sure you follow through on due diligence for keyword research. Very rarely does a site owner find keywords that they settle with. You have to do that to rank though. Stick to a game plan. That's not to say you can't rank for slightly varied versions of those keywords too.. Focusing on most-relevant-highest-traffic-producing-targeted-traffic keyword(s) for EACH PAGE is the way to go.

Search query reports in Google Webmaster Tools is a good way to see what keywords are getting activity and which ones may be worth extra effort.

For link building, do some research on what a "quality link" is and start brainstorming on how you can high relevant and authority links. If you want to do it right, see: SEOmoz SEO Guide - Chapter 7: Growing Links and Popularity

Thanks, Brad. I have several of your reports/guides/pdf's.

I appreciate you coming in here and helping, and it shows everyone what a repository of knowledge the WF is.

I would refer to you as a Guru, but lately guru has a negative conotation to it so I don't know how to address you other than a "good guy".

      Thanks for 'paying it forward'!

I'm clicking on your links now.

In my opinion yes it is more effective in your link building process and do focus on off page optimization rather than off page technique

    Bookmarking is backlinking:rolleyes:

Backlink Booster is to help get backlinks that you create (especially on new pages, like profile backlinks for instance) indexed by google, not really create new backlinks to your money sites.

BMD is great for bookmarking, but IMHO, Bookmarking is pretty much useless for Google ranking purposes.

you can always go with bookmarking but i preffer backlinking since you create quality links pointing back to your site and some are dofollow links. Yo can always use sites like shetoldme.com or mashbite.com or xomba they are all social bookmarking website that are dofollow and share 100% of the revenue from your articles.

A bookmarking is more easy, you can submit 10 links with bookmarks in 30mins but you can only find one backlink after quite a lot of works,,,,
