Just came across this SEO tutorial for beginners. Not sure whether it is updated to the current SEO climate. But it looks pretty good.

      The best results are gained from using the following:

      Type in your target keyword in google, visit every site on the first 3 to 5 pages and see if you can get a link from that site. Maybe the website owner has a blog and you can make comments with linkback or the blog owner accepts guest posters or you can pay a fee to have a backlink on the homepage.

      This is not the only thing you should do but if you add the above into your plan, then it can get you some top quality backlinks.
