Hi, I'm new here. I am running two websites and struggling to get moving in the SERPs. Both have been stuck in #2 and #3, and getting that #1 spot is proving to be much harder than I thought.

Not sure If I can post links.. but if you Google 'Bouncy Castles'.. I'm #2 on Google.co.uk. Likewise if you Google 'Bouncy Castle Hire Liverpool', I'm stuck at #3. I was just wondering if there was a way of determing how solid my competitors position is.

I've just started using Buildmyrank for both sites.. Will this help and how many posts should I be looking at getting done. It's turning out to be extremely expensive at 2$ per post.

Thanks for any advice.

I use Market Samurai, this is a great tool that offers so much. One of their many functions is SEO competition, this show you why your competitors are out ranking you and what backlinks they have.

I had a look at your keywords and it has you with only 5 backlinks....you need a lot more....you need some basic SEO with H1 and H2 headers with your keyword in them.

Take a look at the free sample of Market Samurai and you will see where you can improve your google ranking.

I had a brief look on the site explorer at Yahoo which revealed that my competitors had very little backlinks, but they're holding them positions some how! I'll take a look at that tool now, thank you.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no way to know.
There is no magic list, or the crazy idea about backlinks.

Google can give authority to some sites for a variety of reasons.
Once there, it may take a natural disaster to unseat them.

Your question is so common here....best answer I have ever
seen, is that your site(s) are not in a vacuum. Neither is your
      competition.

Google gives love to some sites and it is impossible to know why.
Like wikipedia. Maybe because it's free, no ads, etc. But the info
can be downright untruthful and unreliable. I know there are some,
but I don't know many who would even think of linking to it for
      honest-to-goodness-real info.

Another site is ezinearticles. Full of junk.

The list of sites that are tops and don't deserve it is pretty long.

Don't ever think that there is some magic list to follow to unseat the
      top dog.

Just keep doing good things, and maybe someday...or settle for other
      ways of getting traffic.

Thank you for that paul. Absolutely spot on about Wiki.

I noticed that also Yukan.. it says mine has over 3,000. Likewise with my other website, it has over 2500 where as the top dogs have 7-10?

You have done well so far...as paulgl said above, just keep doing good things and someday you will reach the top..
One other advice..create blogs (I personally recommend Wordpress..search engines like this platform)..add quality content and then backlinks to your main site..and don't forget to leave comments on other people's blogs..and include your main site URL..

      Cheers

Yahoo is stupid and more strick in some ways, so... sometimes it is good to stay in the 2 or 3 pages, the key word and rank are changing every day so you can think about doing more seo in the content itself and try to make more high quality pages, I think if you have 10 pages, then all of them on the #2 is much better than just 1 page on the #1, and the other 9 rank poorly.
