Hi guys!
I cant seem to find the answer to a newbie question. Will someone explain to me how the PPC game is played and why? I thought the way to get the traffic to ones site is to get optimized and get on the first page of google. If one does the PPC game then does he get the traffic instead of the optimized site? I feel silly but i really dont know... Thanks!!!

PPC involves paying (per click ) to get traffic to your website.

That's completely different to ensuring that your site is well optimized.

You might be getting confused since SEO can bring traffic to your site (good SEO -> good SERPs -> traffic), although you needn't be confused since PPC and SEO are pretty unrelated.

SEO is (kind of) a way to get traffic organically via the SERPs, whilst PPC is advertising. Hence they are pretty different and they certainly don't cancel each-other out

OK then, where do the PPC companies find their customers to send to your site? Do the customers come from search engines? Im trying to grasp the actual process. If you can point me to some reading that breaks it down for me i'd appreciate that. Thanks

One of the biggest PPC companies is Google AdWords. Their ads appear as 'Sponsored Listings' in the SERPs:

(For example, see top and right of the natural SERPs at: ) credit cards - Google Search

And (depending on the advertiser) also via Google Ads which publishers place on their website.

I'm not sure of a good guide which breaks it down much more, although hopefully the sponsored listings in Google SERPs example will be useful.

It comes from the sponsored ads on the search engine results pages, tv ads, video ads, content network ads (sites on the web that display ads thru adwords or adcenter or an equivalent) and there are many other pay per click companies and networks.

It's a HUGE industry, a 20 BILLION dollar industry even a few years back, and that is just adwords alone. Now that mobile marketing is much more popular it is even more important. Not only can you track your conversions and see which keywords are performing for you, you can test things out on adwords/PPC traffic exclusively and implement the successful components into your regular site.
