To put it bluntly, black hat is the process of using unethical and spammy techniques to build backlinks and exposure in the search results pages.

    Stay well away from it.

Hidden text, keyword stuffing, link farms, link exchange giants are all part of black hat, I never use these techniques because Google can ban you for too long.

I am aware about almost 30 black hat SEO techniques , my experience says it's good to go with white hat techniques as this is a safe process, whereas in black hat if you goes wrong anywhere there are chances of getting penalized by the google.

Black Hat although unethical and spammy will get you money fast, now don't get me wrong here. The thing with most black hat techniques is that google has already cracked down on them.

The ones that google have not, you will not hear about it because they are really underground and kept secret from the rest of the world.

Lord knows how someone gets "Buy Viagra" as Ranke #1 in google, but I am sure he's making a TON of money every day.

Black Hat is good for quick money if done right, but here is the catch, they never last long, they is why White hat is usually desired.

Honestly if I some how find a loop hole in google to make tons of money and it is strictly Black Hat, I would do it in a heartbeat. I am sure most people would do the same thing.

There is no such thing. There are things that work and are beneficial,
and then things that are not.

All is fair in love, war, and getting traffic to your website.

Most of us STFU about it.

The term black ha t SEO implies it works. So, if it works, why not
use some of it? If it does not work, then it's not SEO, is it?

The term is misleading. Very misleading.

You people are all listing stuff that doesn't do shinola, and actually
some things that do! Complete idiotic mixup of real SEO.

So, this person spammed the forum. Will it help, or not help?

Some duplicate content, iframes, doorway pages, cloaking,
buying links, keyword stuffing, etc. are perfectly legit, done the
right way. Has nothing to do with anything. Even "stealing"
content can be very, very good.

Black Hat search engine optimization is used to refer to in an unethical way to get higher search ranking technology. These black hat SEO techniques usually include one or more of several features like creation, as black hat SEO techniques used on the site a poor user experience directly.

Black hat seo is, of course, anything your competition does to rank better than you. Sometimes referred to as spam.....sites positioned above mine.

This is gonna sound odd, but I agree with you 100% Paul.

HOWEVER, it becomes "Black Hat" when taken to the ludicrous extremes of Search Engine TOS violations.

We all "Keyword Stuff", but not to the point where the content is unreadable...

Cloaking is done in the meta tags, not with white-on-white text...

Doorway pages are just URL redirects, but the page to which White Hatters redirect actually has something to do with the search term...

Yes, I agree that well all engage in these tactics, but not necessarily to the 'Black Hat' extreme.

Ahhhhh yes...but then breaking any search engine rules or TOS cannot in anyway
be considered "SEO." If you leave the the term SEO off of the black hat, then
          you may have something.

Black Hat SEO is just really Off-White SEO. Read: Not mainstream.

I would even contend that black hat should refer to shrewd, not bad, tactics.

Bad tactics gives true black hat a bad name.

Black Hat SEO is not recommended to use in link building due to its short duration of results and being penalized by google. Buying Links is Black Hat? I don't think so. Maybe you have overlooked at. =)

Truth be told, Black Hat can generate more traffic, but as one of my competitors has found out, it will also get you removed from search indexes. Twice in his case

He's still 50% Black Hat now, but he's more careful.

It's always best to wear your White Hat if you care about your businesses image.

Well, I replied to a post on someone today telling us to put:
      copyright 2010 keyword keyword
at the bottom of the page for some magical ranking.

It could be construed as keyword stuffing. Not exactly what one should
be doing. But, you may be able to tweak the idea, and actually do it in
a way that would help. Keyword stuffing is not SEO, IMHO, but getting your
keyword, on the page, in unique ways, may actually help. A little. Is
      either way black hat?

I wish this thread would die. Oops. Guilty of reviving it.

  • Truth be told. Every internet marketer is involved in one blackhat method or another. What makes the difference is the level of involvement of each person. Another thing is that one could be playing blackhat without knowing that what he or she is doing is blackhat.

Black hat is basically cheating the search engines. It is fooling the search engine by using techniques.

So search engines should have any say with how I handle my site? They have voluntary search engines. I didn't agree or not agree to be in it, nor did I agree to abide by their arbitrary rules.

Obviously they can decide what sites to put in their search results, and how to rank sites (and that is their right as a private site), but to say that their search engine policies should label something I do for my own site as good or bad, or ethically OK or ethically bad is ludicrous.

Black hat is all about fooling the search engines by using the processes that are unethical to search engines. It's good to avoid them as by applying them there are almost chances of getting penalized by google.

Black hat can have a very negative effect on your rankings, you can get banned from search engines and only works in the short term for traffic, etc.
