By the way, take this with a grain of salt - I believe I understand Google SEO but I know I don't understand Bing SEO at all.

Google is the best currently. Now if you would have asked this question in the late 90s the answer would have been Yahoo. Things can change and a worthy competitor could come in the future. But for the foreseeable future it will be Google.

Ask yourself this. Which search engine do you use most of the time? Google definitely gets my searches and clicks. Before Google, Yahoo was clearly the favorite. I'm not exactly sure what happened to Yahoo, but it shows how nothing lasts forever. Who knows which search engine will dominate 10 years from now.

Best in what way, and from whose perspective?

It's all subjective, isn't it.

Google commands just about the highest number of searches for most keyword phrases, by many many times. So from a website owner's perspective, Google is likely "the best" - at least as far as its potential to send them the most traffic and/or contribute the most to their income.

However, that probably doesn't ring so true if they're ranked poorly in Google, and much better in Yahoo or other search-engines.

There's too many factors to take into consideration and too many perspectives from which to look and attempt to form a "blanket" decision about what is best. And people are entitled to their own opinions, anyway ... so who would I or anyone else be to speak for everyone else by saying "which is best"?

EDIT: I make more money from Google (both due to getting the most traffic from them, and because I use Google AdSense). So to me, they're the best.

I also find them easier and more pleasurable to use from an end-user perspective. Nicer, cleaner website, and more relevant search results in most cases.

In my opinion, Google is the bets search engines for both searchers and webmasters. People who are searching in Google get the best results and webmasters get the most traffic from Google. Its the best.

Really a subjective question, Google is probably the best though because it is the most popular. I can't imagine using any other search engine, I've used Google since the early 2000's.

Being Google dominates 70% of the market the figures speak for themselves. Other than that I think the Chinese may argue Baidu is the best, but unless you either speak Chinese or use Chinese search engines then Google hands down.

No, I always preferred Yahoo. I didn't even start using Google until I started reading this forum. It was ok, but not great. Now Google is beyond bad since Penguin so I'm back to Yahoo. Google gives me articles, blog posts and forum threads from 2005!
