What is a "PR-4 site"? Most people would understand it to mean a site of which the home page has a page-rank of 4. You see my point, perhaps? "Sites" don't have "page-rank". Pages have page-rank. Are the pages on which your links were placed themselves PR-4 pages? Or (as usually turns out to be the case) PR-0 pages? Have you asked this?

Your logic's correct in the sense that the "weight" attributed to a backlink by a search engine depends, in principle, among other things, on the number of outgoing links on that page, and can get "diluted", albeit not on a straightforward, linear scale.

Yes indeed. Your best chance with it is perhaps that a search engine will see it and nobody else will.

There's a Firefox add-on that will readily show you (there are other ways, too). I don't look at them, myself, because I like no-follow backlinks, too, and get value from them, but I recognize that many people feel they don't.

Many thanks for the detailed answers Alexa. Sorry I didn't explain the first bit right. Yes the home pages are PR4+ but as you say the profile pages are not ranked.

Luckily I did not pay for the service as I got a review, however it does concern me that the sales pitch is misleading with regards to PR as it indicates that the link will be left on the ranking page.

Would it be advisable to remove 4 links and just leave 1 myself? Also politically would it be the done thing to voice my concerns in a testimonial or would it just be best to leave none at all (just thinking about people who actually pay for the service)

Call me a skepchick, but I have seen it said that that tends, sometimes, to be the case with "backlinking services". People have mixed feelings about them. Their promotion was more or less banned here not long ago. I'm not certain, but I think that may have changed very recently.

I wouldn't think you need to do that. Opinions always differ about these subjects, but it's difficult to envisage anyone thinking that your site would actually show a net gain from doing that. I'd just leave it all alone and go out for dinner, myself ...

Opinions will differ. (When don't they?!). Personally, I'm opposed to "testimonials for 'review copies' ", really, but that's an extremely unhelpful (and perhaps unkind) observation from me, sorry. :p

Services like this are crap.

Profile links I have never got my head around how people can sell them. They normally have absolutely no PR regardless of the homepage, and why on earth google would give weight to links from profile pages is beyond me also.

Proper links that work are from other websites within the content on sub pages... this is a hell of a lot of hard work...

So sign up to either, 1waylinks, 3waylinks or thelinkjuicer.com <- these are great, i'm signed up to all 3 for my video game sites.

Thanks Joseph... I'm quite a newbie when it comes to IM and it is a bit info overload at the moment. Everyone has something to offer but its just trying to sort the wheat from the chaff.... I'll check out the sites you mention thanks.

1. They sell because they work - whether one can get their head around why Google does anything Google does or not.

2. Proper links? on subpages? Ummm ... sounds kinda like a profile page.

- so a subpage on a blog for example with zero / PR n/a is proper - but a link on a subpage of a forum that is PR0/PR n/a is NOT proper?

Ive got forum profiles that are more unique and better quality content than a load of the tripe I have to endure on EZA ...

See this is where it starts to get confusing... you are both knowledgeable chaps but have opposite views... I'm all for horses for courses but not when I'm flogging a dead one

I guess its gonna be trial and error and some lost cash to see what works for me

Luckily I did not.. it was a review copy as it was a new thread and I'm guessing they wanted to build up confidence in their product. It just didn't sit right with me though hence my questions...

The best thing you can do is Learn how to SEO yourself.

Once you understand how it all works, you can outsource and not get ripped off.

Its like being a complete noob at fixing computers, you may just need a cable pluged in but the guy will charge you 500 for his time and wont tell you what the problem was (taking advantage of newbies), were as if you knew what he did you can refuse to pay or simply do it yourself or atleast have a better understanding.
