Is that to sign up for a membership or for advertising?
How does that help improve local/map listings?

Yup, you write a citation/review for your google places service. This should improve your google places rank. If you purchased Chad Kimballs google maps cash or the other Google Places WSO (roughly $297) you'd know the value of this 40% off coupon

Map listings rely on citations. Look at the top listing in your niche, it probably has 10 or so citations on 10 very specific websites. There are only a handful of websites that one can write citations on, that will move your listing up in the ranks.

Just to clarify. Reviews posted by customers or the business directory listings?

You write you own review for your service(for your google map/places listing) using websites like angies list. These websites are the ones that move your listing towards the top results and get you more traffic.

You can also use it to write reviews for your clients listings, which should bring you $$$.

How is angieslist a backlink? Backlinks don't do a thing for google maps
      anyway. So,...

How does this help google maps?

Ratings help, but you can get friends to do reviews. Free.
judysbook is free. Other ratings are free.

But a link to a review is not a backlink for any website.

In fact, you don't need a website for google maps.

Your location and relevancy are looked at first, then ratings.
      Ratings can be free.

If you want to just be listed on angieslist, that's another story.

Well considering I rank clients sites higher and faster using angieslist and about 10 other websites that the websites ranked in the top 10 results tend to use. There must be something right being done. Either way. Whatever the method/citation achieving more visibility is the only concern.
