Anyone care to give their take on the difference (if any)
between "external nofollow" and just "nofollow" ?

Yeah I've googled it. No help, really. So I hope anybody has
opinions not gleaned form the web, but a semi-concrete take.
There seems to be a lot of guessing.

    These folks claim that the new 'external' parameter means that it's a nofollow link into a new window.

    Could give it a try with some quick code..

    Edit: While it is recognized as a nofollow attrib,it doesn't seem to be working, in terms of opening the link in a new window.

      I think the opening in a new window/tab must be a browser thing.
      It does denote external link for some purpose.

      I'm interested in knowing if google does not interpret this correctly
      and ignores the whole thing, nofollow included.

      it just does not make sense to use "external nofollow" as opposed to
      rel="external" rel="nofollow"

    Somehow I don't think Google ignores it. I'd wager that they consider it a nofollow link anyways. Of course this is just speculation on my part.

    Interestingly, the DONOFOLLOW Firefox extension highlights 'nofollow', 'external' and 'external nofollow' all in red, indicating that they're nofollow's (dofollow's are highlighted green).
