Massive indexing without backlinking? Sitemaps?

Have a competitor who has 2 sites. Each is auto-generated crap, but...

One page has 30k pages indexed in Google, the other one 15k pages.

He has 0 backlinks.

How is that possible?

I'm thinking it has something to do with the way he created his sitemaps. Any ideas on how that's done?

My sites have 4 sitemaps with 50k URLs each, but nowhere near his results.

You dont need to have backlinks per say to get a site indexed.

Each domain register is linked up to a site, and when new domains are added to their servers, its listed on some website which is crawled many times a day, and the link is picked up via there.

His domains are probably a lot older..

Even so, just get yourself a handful of backlinks for your site and you'll be ranking above him in no time at all..

I checked backlinks through Yahoo site explorer. I assume you're talking about those monitoring sites? Should they appear when doing a backlinks check? Is there anything better than Yahoo Site Explorer to check backlinks?

Sites are actually a lot younger than mine. I have hundreds of links, not bad quality also. But my sites have 1/8 amount of pages in Google index compared to his.

          Hi bizousoft,

Without seeing the actual sites you are comparing we can only guess. My guess would be that your competitor is probably using superior internal link structure, or there are more backlinks than you are aware of.

ha! think you nailed it right on the head!

The guy has internal linking which is far better than mine. Each page links out to 12 other random pages on the site. I don't have that on my sites.

Trust me. When it's auto-generated crap, it's all random... lol

Not entirely sure what you mean bizousoft.

All I can say is, one day my web host / friend showed me why it was possible for a site to get indexed with no backlinks... cos I thought (since im not a web host and knew nothing about it), when a site is up, there are no backlinks.

He showed me some site, cant remember now, it was MANY years ago. That listed all the domain registers on this web site and which domains they were hosting, it was because of this they the site was indexed...

There has to be a link pointing to your site from somewhere in order for your site to be indexed, as you know... so If i never did any backlinks, who did? it wasn't a backlink for the intention to do seo... just a reference link; dub dub dub domain dot com...

Here is an example you will surely understand

            forexsignalmentor.com web information profile

There are many sites like that. They somehow discover new domains that were created. May be crawling whois records or something. Then they produce worthless estimates of sites and put them online.

That gives you a free link. I assumed you were talking about them.

Indexing is possible without backlinks. I had some sites which I verified in webmastertools, but forgot to create backlinks. Several months later I noticed they were indexed quite nicely by Google.

Backlinks do help but also clear navigation on the site, a human and xml sitemap as well as many other things. Large indexing of sites just comes through time

What interests me in your case - does your competitor rank well in SERPs for decently competitive keywords that thay are targeting/seem to have in focus?

The key to getting your pages indexed organically without a sitemap or backlinks is to 1.) submit the site manually to the engine, & 2.) Make sure every page is not more than 2 clicks from the home page. It's important that an algorithm can spider your pages within 2 followed links of the home page, as lots search engines cap off how deep they will index a site to improve the speed of indexing. This is also the main reason sitemaps got so popular, due to caps on deep indexing.
