I'm so frustrated with my webmaster

Please let me vent a bit, none of the gun stores are open yet and I want to prevent a tragedy...

I'm constantly fighting with my webby because I learn something on the WF and when I ask him to impliment it he goes ito a song and dance about why we can't. I'm talking simple stuff like 301 redirects and sitemaps... everythings a story.

Now I'm trying to get him to fix my title tags on inner pages so they will be unique to the content on the page and he says it can't be done because the template is a database in php blah blah blah. He says he cannot just go to each unique page and edit the title. He wants to write some kind of script that will look at the content of each page and create a title tag according to what it sees as the content on the page.

I never heard of anything like that. It sounds crazy and my SEO guy in India never heard of it either. My seo guy has worked miricles for me and we have the chance to really dominate some really competitive keywords but I can't get my webby to cooperate.

Has anyone here ever heard of a situation where you can't edit individual title tags on an inner page? Ever?
I have my site set in ecomerce templates emailrevealer.com please someone save me here before I wind up in prison for mass murder.

    Hi Emailrevealer,

It sounds like your "webby" must be using some sort of a content management system (CMS). If so, he may need to modify the code of the CMS to allow for your requests. What you're requesting is rather basic and should already be built into most CMS programs.

I would discourage the script that creates the title tag for you, based on the content it sees. Your title tags are the single most important element for SEO and these need to be carefully selected based on keyword research and analysis. While the title tag should reflect what a visitor can expect to find on your web page, it should not be created without strong influence from your keyword research.

You may also want to experiment with different title tags to see which works best. A script that selects your titles for you would make ail this too difficult.

I would sit down with your webmaster and explain that the ability to experiment and optimize your web pages for maximum search engine traffic is paramount. He needs to modify his CMS so that key elements can be manipulated easily. Ask him why not allow title, h1 and descriptions tags to be stored in separate fields in that database? That's what I would do if I created the script. He could create a form that lets you enter those elements yourself.

Of course, making these changes to a script is no trivial task and you should expect to pay your programmer for his time. But, once the modifications are done, you or your SEO guy could make the changes without having to involve your web programmer.

    Thanks Don
I emailed him your comment. I'm waiting for a reply. This is so frustrating for me going back and forth between these guys. I'm going to have to learn how to build and run the sites myself.

Well everything is possible if the CMS code is not encoded. I think he just doesn't wants to work

I was talking to the guys that do our computer forensics and they say they can go in and fix anything on the site for a few bucks.
I hate to get rid of my webby. We've been in this together from the beginning but business is business.
It's just way too frustrating and costing way too much money.

I really can't understand this one! I'm tempted to say replace him but it seems like you have a good relationship that you want to continue. I think your first steps are to find what type of CMS is being used perhaps that is the root of the complications and a new type of CMS needs to be implimented making it easier for both you and webby to maintain your web presence.

All the best. Glad the gun shops are closed

    Thanks Jane.
In considering the big picture I have to realize that I've out grown my webby and need to move on. I also need to learn the basics myself, like dreamweaver.

I think your solution is to learn to create your own sites.

I had a local friend of mine who desperately wanted to use me as
his Webmaster. I did not want the headaches and especially did
      not have the time.

Our solution: We both met up at his house, and using two separate
laptops, I went through building pages.
After 4 hours on one weekend, I went home and he worked on pages
and SEO "homework" and creating tables and etc.

The next weekend we worked together 4 more hours.

End result was he paid me $200 and called me a few more times.
$25 an hour was cheap, but he was a friend who did not want something for nothing.

      Another situation I had:
I also live in a College town. I did not know Photoshop. I ran an ad in the college paper and found a Sophomore who was willing to teach me in four hour sessions.
He was glad to receive $25 an hour to teach me many shortcuts
and techniques and I received very good instruction.

Does this give you any ideas or food for thought?
It helped my friend earlier and myself later.
      Cheers,
      Carey

Yes very good advice from all of you. I'm planning on taking a class in dreamweaver.
I really need somone in my office helping out with this stuff everday but until sales reach a certain point I'll have to learn to do it myself.

There are a number of online tutorials that you can take for dreamweaver that will help you do pretty much everything that you would want to do. Sounds like your webmaster has little or no skills himself.
