It's going to be near IMPOSSIBLE to give you an estimate on time!

It all depends on how many backlinks you build, how often you build them, what quality these backlinks are and on top of all that - how fast Google finds them!

Then on top of all that, there's the element of how relevant your content is!

To give you an answer would be impossible. The only close answer is "it depends" .

The right strategy is go for long tail in the beginning, then secondary keywords and last primary keywords. Time cannot be told, you just have to keep building links and add content. Don't go very fast, make it look natural.

It depends how fast and effective you are with your backlinking. It is estimated that it takes up to 3-6 months to rank #1 with a competitive keyword if your backlinking is consistent and the techniques used are powerful enough. My own goal usually is to backlink 2X more than my competitor has. If #1 websites has 3000 links I would do 6000 links within a certain time frame(usually 3-6 months) and the backlinks must be as quality as my #1 competitor.

To start with you can just spy on your competitor with SEO Spyglass(free edition is good enough if you dont have the money for full version) If possible leave a link where your competitor has left them.

All in all do more than your #1 competitor and you will get that position soon enough!
