Newbie SEO

I've been searching for a good local niche keyphrase for a while but since I live in a suburban area there's almost no search volume data. But I may have possibly found a good niche keyphrase: "swpa homes". swpa stands for southwest pennsylvania (actually a different state but I don't want to give it away). Search volume is 2900 per month, competition is medium (213 pages) and cost per click is nil according to keyword tool.

Am I correct in seeing this as a possibly profitable keyphrase?

I'm concerned though because I looked at the top ten search results and although Traffic Travis says seo competition is minimal, when I look at the stats, such as Page rank, top five sites are 4,5,5,6,4 and domain ages are 13,8,8,8,8 and they all have plenty of backlinks. They are pretty much all directory sites. Sites 6-10 have low PR and newer domain age and few links. I'm assuming based on those stats, that I would have a serious challenge breaking the top 5, is that correct?

Any insight is appreciated.

    Using the Webtistic Keyword Competition Tool, the difficulty is showing as 33% which equates to 'barely competitive', so it should be relatively easy to rank highly for the term (depending on your SEO and link building efforts of course).

    The tool takes into account:

    • Google Pagerank
    • SEOMoz Page Authority
    • SEOMoz Domain Authority
    • Domain Age
    • Listed In DMOZ
    • Listed in Yahoo Directory
    • Keyword in Root Domain?
    • Keyword in Page Title?
    • Keyword In Meta Description?
    • Keyword In Heading Tag?

    I would not post your potential keyterms in a forum. If it is profitable, you can bet a dozen people are already now making sites for it. Keep them to yourself.

    No one knows if you will profit from the phrase until you actual build a site around it. Many IMs build several sites based on profitable phrase potentials. Some sites will turn out to have profitable potentials and some will not. They drop from their list the non profitable ones and add more content to the sites that shown profit potentials. And they build more sites and repeat the process. The key is to act, get experience, learn for those experience and apply what you learn to build more sites.

    It shouldnt be very hard to rank that phrase fairly quick....If you are certain that the keyword volume is 2900 and the competition that low then I would say it could be profitable...It all depends on your sales conversion as well....

      Front page looks easy but my question was really about getting close to the top of the front page.

      I mean, isn't it necessary to look at the top sites to see how good their seo is?

    Sure you should look at your competitors links and how they do it...However, if you really want to rank for that phrase make sure to get more back links from solid sites using that anchor text link...I assume that you did your onsite properly and if you did, the rankings should shoot up in the top most likely..hard to say how long but you should see it work if you know what youre doing..
