What to do when .com, .net and .org are taken?

If your targeted keyword is not available in .com, .net or .org, what do you recommend:

- Do you just add a word to the domain name? Example: if keyword.com and keyword.net and keyword.org are taken, you go with keywordonline.com? And if not "online", what other words are useful in appending that keyword in the domain?

- Do you hyphenate the keyword. Example: if mymainkeyword.com and mymainkeyword.net and mymainkeyword.org are taken, you go with my-main-keywordonline.com?

Or any other suggestions? Thanks for your help

First check if .co available for that keyword?

If not then try keywordcom.com , next try keywordonline.com, then keywordinfo.com.

If a different keyword is absolutely out of the question, then I'd add hyphens (ex: learn-dog-training.com). I really don't like hyphens AND .net/.org. At that point, I think I'd consider throwing in the towel. You can try adding stop-words, too, though (i.e. 'the', 'a', etc; e.g. 'thedogtrainer.com').

Personally, I just hate not having the perfect domain, but sometimes it's worth it if the keyword is just right.

If you REALLY want the domain, approach the owner and make an offer, or at the very least, see if theyre willing to sell.

you can also add a word AFTER the doamin name you want (If you are doing seo)

if you want to get 3w.yourdomain.com and all the option are taken... try 3w.yourdomainsite.com or 3w.yourdomainreview.com

I've heard that a .info domain can be just as easy to get high SERPs for as any top level domain. Certain people will say it is, certain people will say it's not, but I can point out to you several examples of good keywords with non-top level domains as their #1.

  the must have 'keyword in domain' thinking is just a myth.
  not sure how it got started, probably a guru who stated
  "you must have keywords in your domain" ... yet never
  actually tested ...
  
  if you just do a bit a research? you can see that it just is
  not any guarantee that you will get top ranking...CONTENT
  that is seo relevant will always smoke the competition!
  
  I just picked something at random ... googled 'car deals'
  see it here <- (keep in mind that the results may shift)
  
  when I did the search? the top 3 google results/domains were:

  only one has the keyword in the domain, AND the #1 for both
  is a sub-domain? also destroying another myth that subdomains
  can not rank (well or at all).
  
  now I am not saying that trying to get a keyword rich domain is
  not worth the effort, BUT the description of each site is taken
  from an <h1> tag! not from the domain. there is far more to
  getting a good or even great ranking than the keywords in the
  domain.
  
  I would rather try
  for a domain that:
  - is not misspelled easily
  - is memorable
  - not too long
  
  put more effort into content and proper use of on page seo like
  <h1> and <h2> tags, and then work on getting inbound links
  from relevant sites, and less thought into acquiring the 'perfect'
  domain.

There are a few options but i would firstly look for something similar and if you keep going round in circles then use the info above because all of it is great and there's no real wrong answer to this one as everyone is different.

I have several .info ranking well as well as a .biz. I think that you can get almost any extension to rank if you put in the work.

  A lot depends on what your intention is for the site. But the first thing I'd do is check whether the sites with the .com, .net and .org domains were well established and currently ranking highly for the keyword and whether what they're doing now would be competing with my intended project.
  
  If they were, I'd seriously consider going for a different keyword. Otherwise, the danger is that a large part of your marketing will only serve to help the existing sites.

If it is a known brand, get the hyphenated version.
Otherwise .info is cheaper and does just as well.

Buy the .com, it's always cheap domains out there. Better to pay $100 for a fairly good domain, then to spend hours to build a good site on a crappy domain.

  If you want to build an authoritve site, then I suggest you use the keyword first then followed by another word which creates branding such as what I have done with Make Money Online Classroom
  
  If you want an authoritive site then ideally you want to use a .com Don´t go for a .info unless you are just selling affiliate products.
  
  Obviously .net & .org rank well but may not be ideal for branding purposes.

Add something to your keyword. Adding a my in front of your keyword helps if it makes sense. Adding blog at the end of the keyword is good. You might want to play around with the name, it's one of the fun parts you should definitely experience.

try using different keywords

for eg: the keyword which you are looking for is Car Rental.

you can try car-rental.com or car-rentals.com or cars-rental.com, like this try with .org or .co, you will surely find one. but if nothing is available better consult the owner and offer him a price.

Well you have plenty of different options above and none of them are right or wrong, it all comes down to how much you want the .com and most of us want the .com

I do agree with "Key" above that most of your concentration should be spent on your content. Some say you need your keywords in your domain and others say you don't, who really knows apart from the search engines.

If you can get your keywords in your domain, then that is great as it relates to your site, but to add a throw away word in my opinion is absolutely fine, a few I have not seen above are.... portal, center, blog, haven, to add on the end of your keywords.

What ever you choose, you will still need to drive traffic, so go with what you think is right and what you are happy with

Yes, i will try to use synonyms for my targeted keywords or will try to add plural form of my keyword. Yes, .info domain should also serve your needs if no tld i left for you
