How hard would this be to rank for?

I'm thinking of creating a small review site for the video game niche. It would be a niche within that niche (for example a certain series of games or genre). I don't want to create thousands of pages reviewing every game...

However I believe the competition to be fierce from a quick google search. From searching a popular game + review the top page is filled with many authority sites on the video game niche (like IGN for example). The rest is reviews from newspapers etc.

How hard do you think it will be realistically to rank highly for something like this? Obviously I haven't done much keyword research but from a glance it looks 'too hard' to rank for me currently and perhaps i'll just move on.

Thoughts?

    Personally I think if you niche very tight you could do well, but my question is with the quick turn over in the video game market what would you do to sustain the market once your game was stale?

    I am absolutely bonkers over the Assassin's Creed games. I have thought many times about doing a site for that game, but it seems like an awful lot of work building the audience only to lose their interest after the game gets old.

      I have thought about this myself.

      I came to the conclusion that sites on retro games, 'classics' etc would be the best way to go about it. I was thinking of doing a Final Fantasy one for example. I think any series of game where it's almost garunteed a new one will be released could be fine, it would just mean adding more content every year or so. For example with the call of duty games one comes out every year.

    I agree that when the newer games go stale you'll probably lose your market. The idea of classic games sounds smart, and in a tight niche (niche within a niche) you will probably be able to rank well as long as you know some SEO and take the appropriate steps to build some backlinks.

    Perhaps making a niche-specific site on a game developer or publisher, for example square-enix. Then having 20-30 pages or so that are game reviews with amazon affiliate links? Do a bit of SEO work and try to drive some traffic, if it converts well try and create an authority site?

    Do you think this would work? I am looking for somewhere to start my first IM project and need to create some income off of it really...

    A niche such as video-games also opens up more things to promote via strategy guides, consoles etc - or am I thinking way too broad here?

      It depends on the game. I was thinking about doing a site strictly for Final Fantasy 7. Just to give you an idea of how popular that game still is even after like 13 years of its release it gets 90,000 searches a month and that is exact searches. Classics like this could be good. One classic game is probably the best way to go instead of trying to cover a series which is can get crazy. You can make money with adsense maybe but then again who knows. It is just an idea.
