I have had great success ranking static HTML sites but I have recently purchased a WordPress blog and uploaded to one my domains. I am having trouble getting it ranked. I purchased it from Templatic.com and they said it is optimized for SEO but is there a really great free plugin that I can use to help with this?

Any suggestions on what I may have to do different to rank a wordpress blog verses a static HTML site?

Are you kidding, there's an onslaught of WP SEO plugins.

    All-in-one SEO is quite popular.

No I'm not kidding. WordPress is new to me and so that's why I'm posting here. I have tried to use a couple different SEO plugins but they require a Akismet API key in which I applied for one but it hasn't been sent to me for some reason.

Pretty sure akismet costs. Just post often. SEO isn't something that takes effect in two seconds.

akismet is free as long as you don't make money from the site you requesting the API key for.

You don't want to make money for your site?

Anyway, you can rank your site without an API key.

Get All-In-One-SEO-Pack plugin for WP and configure it in the admin panel by updating the blog title post title, home meta details etc. to be more SEO optimized (if your SEO theme isn't already optimized for these)

Then, whenever you create a page/post you will have the plugins details below every page where you can overwrite titles, descriptions, and keywords with SEO ones.

Your site will be basically the same in Googles eyes as a HTML site so just preview the site and check that everything is optimized on-page (as you would have with your html site).

Then you can start the offpage (backlinking) SEO to increase your organic results.

Thanks, this is a personal site I'm doing that will not be making money. I do have other sites I'm working on for money though. I don't think the theme I purchased is optimized for the post titles. It is optimized for the title tag and description tag though

Ok, Just make sure your site is optimized for post/page titles.

I usually set the plugin to use ONLY the exact post or page title for the title tag.

    So instead of the default:

MY WEBSITE | MY POST TITLE

    I have it as:

    MY POST TITLE

Of course, my post title is the exact keyword that I am targeting.

The majority of your SEO work should be spent on backlinking though, unless you are in a very low-competition niche/keyword, the on-page SEO won't do much on it's own.

    Hope this helps.

Don't get too caught up with all these "SEO Plugins." I use them myself, but they're no magic bullet. They help you do things like create Title tags, Meta descriptions (which don't even boost rankings anyway), and other things like that, but these are all things you could have done manually, anyway.

If you want to rank, forget all the little plugins and themes and learn how to build high quality backlinks to your homepage.
