Redirect Affects Rankings?

This is a bit speculative on my part, if your typically using 301 permanent redirects to re-route links to the old site address on to the new site, I believe the ranking would migrate to the new site, where the users end up, in such cases it's a good idea to contact the linking sites with a request to update the links.

I recently decided to switch from one domain to a new one that I purchased. So I redirected the old domain to the new. Before the redirect, I had a pagerank of 3 and my site ranked very well.

When I started redirecting to the new domain, my old domain basically fell off the face of the Google planet, and my Pagerank went down to 0. Evidently, I made the switch around the time when Google was updating Pagerank.

However, I noticed that my new domain started ranking quickly. It's as if all of the authority was transfered to the new domain, which is what I wanted to happen.

Once my new domain was well-established, I removed the redirect and started using the old domain for something else. Once I did that, the old domain started ranking well again for the new terms I was targeting.

So, this is not something that I've tested extensively, but it does suggest that redirects do influence rankings. Now, note that I was redirecting the entire domain, and not a single url, so that might also play a factor.

It can be both depending on how exactly you are redirecting and what exactly you are redirecting.
