How Important is the IP Address for SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

Generally speaking, I.P addresses don't play a role in SEO. Most sites on the web are hosted on shared hosting, and your site (along with hundreds other) could be sharing an I.P with a porn site, blackhat site, fake viagra pills site etc it wouldn't wouldn't be fair to ban hundreds of sites based on the I.P of the offending site alone.

Google understands this, and therefore will only do an I.P ban under rare circumstances - i.e googlebot finds hundreds of cloaked blackhat sites using 1 I.P address. That's how it works.

Not true, it pays a role.

Unique IP addresses are classed as a unique vote, so does where the host location is.

You could have different ip addresses under the same host, or server, which will work just fine if they are linked up together... but IP's that are on different host server locations work better..

you'll notice that hostgators seo service does the same thing, using several web hosting data centers.

Loz is dead right, in linking different C-Block IPs are very important.

Becuase if all your links come from 1 IP address, they devalue the links to almost nothing..

But for the site itself, it of somewhat limited value as some of the previous posters have pointed out.

The total number of avialable IP addresses in the entire world is less than the total number of websites out their.
So BigG and the other search engines have realised that most websites these days are on shared hosting, and they have to take that into account..

Right, but unfortunately even different class C IP adresses aren't enough any more to effectively hide link networks and avoid devaluation of links. It's about the link structure, too, so avoid any repeating patterns or footprints (e.g. affiliate IDs).

The role it plays depends on several factors.

First, you're unlikely to run into any trouble because of something someone else does when you're on a larger popular shared hosting platform. There are 1000's of domains per IP address running on massive clustered servers. Back in the days where domain hosting was more limited the IP address was more important but it isn't as strong as it once was, at least to Google.

You may get some sort of bonus ranking if you're on the same domain as an established, well trusted, authority domain. The problem is that I don't think that CNN or some organization like that will give you a spot for your domain on one of their servers.

On the flipside, there are hosts that are known for hosting questionable things like spamming and phishing, especially some hosts in Eastern Europe and Russia. If you host there you might be under a cloud even if you're 100% legit.

You will not actually get affected as there is no concern for SEO with IP.......but there is thr fact that when you think about ranking affected because of hosting thus websites are banned or are lowered in eyes in google if they are sharing same host which a porn or a deardful website is sharing.......otherwise there is no issue

I understand that IP is looked at for spam fighting, but is not a criteria by itself. Naturally professional spammers spread sites and their IP's around, so it would be silly to assume that you would get a "get out of spamming free" card by switching IP addresses.

You have to be careful with switching to a hosting company just because they can provide you with a dedicated server cheap. I'd rather stay with my proven shared plan than risk my sites on someone I don't know. Do you homework...

IP address is not much more important in SEO, But different C class IP address is used to getting backlink from each IP address. Before the hosting we should check the IP address, how many websites is already hosted in that same IP, also check is there any spam website. Suppose is there any spam website is available, our site has the chance to penalized.

What will be the effect of having the same IP address when you're doing SEO? My site has been optimized before by an SEO but when the Google Penguin launched my site rankings goes down. Is there any problem about SEO? Should I still hire SEO?

IP address is taken into consideration in several elements of SEO, and actually just Google in general.

As has already been said, Google is more likely to realize false link patterns if there's a trend in the source IP addresses. In other words, having backlinks from different IP addresses is important, and not forming a pattern with the ones you DO use is important. Link dilution, diversification and pattern variation are critical to continue seeing effective results from any link building efforts.

Additionally, as Google doesn't like people building their own link networks, if they can find a way to link two websites together and show that you're the owner of both then they'll penalize you, either algorithmically or manually. Having diverse IP addresses is one way to combat this.

@addy80 - When you comment on blogs the administrator can see your IP, although I'm not sure if that's what you were asking.

In that extreme case, then I would not go near that number, I would not even utter it near a computer or electrical device.
But in general, you can share you ip no with no problems at all. For instance, DiscountASP a big hoster in the US shares almost all of its thousands of websites on one ip number.
Any flagging of IP numbers I believe would be manual, and they would check it out first.
There is something to say about getting all your links from the same ip address, or same c-block of ip numbers, this can look suss if you have too many from the same.

Yes, it matters a lot. If your hosting is using Dynamic IP for your website then it matters a lot. As researches says that if one site using Dedicated IP instead of dynamic you will get benighted in search engine.

Sometimes, I encounter being banned in some community because of my IP address. How come my IP address looks like a spam? What are the factors why some banned because of the IP? How they measure it?
